Kanebo Coffret d’Or will be discontinued later this year.
According to Coffret d’Or’s official Japanese website (link above), the phasing out of the line’s retail points started in April, and the product production of the line will start to be phased out from June. The official discontinuation date of the line is December 31st, and some products may be sold out before that.
You can read the official announcement (in Japanese) from Coffret d’Or’s official Japanese website. There is additional information (also in Japanese) on a separate FAQ page set up for the discontinuation.
The news is not unexpected. As far as I am aware, Coffret d’Or hasn’t released any new item since summer 2022. Also, Coffret d’Or Gran was discontinued in 2022.
As Kanebo Cosmetics Inc. is currently part of the Kao Group, the reasons for discontinuing Aube and Coffret d’Or could be similar. Kao has been shifting some of its main focus to haircare, and it is in the process of re-branding some of its existing mass-market haircare lines as well as launching new high-premium ones. Also, at the moment, the market for mid-range makeup in Japan seems to be very crowded with both Japanese and overseas brands and lines. Those without clear identities or specific appeals can easily be overlooked.
(On April 20th, Kao launched Melt, a new high-premium haircare line. The press release for the launch outlines the plan to expand the haircare portfolio. You can read the press release here (in Japanese) and here (in English). You can also read the press release for the re-branding of the Essential haircare line here (in Japanese).)
Coffret d’Or was launched in Japan in December 2007. It replaced the point (color) makeup line T’Estimo and the base makeup line Revue. Even though I missed T’Estimo and wasn’t initially too excited about Coffret d’Or, I was later keen to try items from Coffret d’Or’s launch collection. I liked the two eyeshadow palettes I tried from the collection very much, and I picked up at least one variation from most of the subsequent eyeshadow palette series over the following years.

I feel quite attached to both Aube and Coffret d’Or, but the sentiments are different. (I talked about how I felt about Aube in the post on the line’s discontinuation (link above).) Eyeshadow palettes from Coffret d’Or make up a substantial portion of my eyeshadow palette collection, and a few of my items from the line have personal meanings to me. (Some of the Coffret d’Or items I have were given or gifted to me from friends. There are a few of them that I haven’t written about.) Also, I started my blog about a year before the launch of the line. Therefore, since the early days of my blog, I have been documenting the development of the line. I have been sharing my experiences with the products as well, and the line certainly appears quite a lot in my Stash Focus posts.

- 6 Selection Eyes in 02 Lady Beige (June 2018)

Just a few of my favorites:
(Beauty Face Shadow in 02 Cream Brown)
(Full Smile Eyes in 04 Clear Purple)
(Beauty Aura Eyes in 04 Bordeaux)
(Currently, I don’t have any palette from the last three series (Multi Designing Palette (September 2019), Arty Creator Eye & Face (November 2019) and Thé Dolce Shadow (June 2022, link above)). (The line mainly focused on eyeshadow singles (some of which could also be used on the face) between summer 2019 and summer 2021.) Also, I didn’t purchase either of the two Party Makeup Collection palettes (November 2008) or either of the two Luxulight Collection palettes (November 2009).)
At the moment, Beauty Aura Eyes and Nudy Impression Eyes are listed on Coffret d’Or’s official Japanese website, so I presume these two series are still available. I would recommend both. Quality-wise, the three Beauty Aura Eyes palettes I have remind me of the two palettes I have from the 3D Lighting Eyes series (the first eyeshadow palette series from the line). (These two will probably always be my favorite Coffret d’Or eyeshadow palettes.) The powder from the Nudy Impression Eyes palette I have is exceptionally creamy and blendable.
Here are the links to all the posts I have written on the other items from Coffret d’Or:
- Beauty Lasting Pact UV & Beauty Lasting Veil UV (released in Japan in March 2008 (trial samples))
- Full Styling Rouge (Color) in RS-241 & RS-242 (December 2007)
- Makeup Powder & Makeup Powder Case (March 2008)
- Powder Foundation Case (2010SS) (March 2010)
- Cover Clear Finish UV & Finish Powder Case (March 2011)
- Smile Up Cheeks in 05 Coral Pink (December 2012)
Even though I have only tried a sample of Beauty Lasting Pact UV, I do think it is one of the best powder foundations I have come across for those with oily skin. The Smile Up Cheeks series was popular in Japan. The Smile Up Cheeks N series (November 2017) was the second version and the Smile Up Cheek S series (February 2021) is the third and the latest version. (It is listed on Coffret d’Or’s official Japanese website, so I presume it is still available.)
Many Japanese beauty brands and lines update their styles of packaging every few years. This can refresh the overall image, but it can also lead to confusion. The latter seems to be the case with Coffret d’Or in recent years as it seems to lack a clear identity. Even though I really like its summer 2022 makeup collection, its last few seasonal collections don’t have a consistent look. (Arty Creator Eye & Face and Thé Dolce Shadow (links above) don’t really look like products from the same line.)
However, on the whole, I still think that Coffret d’Or has been a big part of the reason why I love Japanese makeup. It offers reasonably-priced, easy-to-use and reliable makeup items with quality that is usually either stellar or at least more than decent. As a fan of Japanese makeup and as a blogger on the subject, the discontinuation of the line feels like the end of an era. While continuing to enjoy using the products I have from the line, I will really miss sharing information on its upcoming releases and charting its development.
