Red-toned shades are among the eyeshadow shades I have been experimenting with lately. (Red-toned eyeshadows have obviously been popular for some time, but I have only been interested in them since earlier this year.) SUQQU‘s Designing Color Eyes in 128 Hiakari in the brand’s 2019 Holiday Makeup Kit A caught my attention as soon as I saw images of it on-line. I decided to go for the set to try it.
SUQQU Designing Color Eyes in 128 Hiakari (スック デザイニング カラー アイズ 128 緋灯/ SUQQU 晶采立體眼彩盤 128 緋灯, limited edition) was released in Japan for the holiday 2019 season. It is included in SUQQU 2019 Holiday Makeup Kit A (スック 2019 ホリデー メイクアップ キット A/ SUQQU 假日晶采彩粧組 A, limited edition, ¥10000 in Japan, £68 in the UK) and it is not available separately. The four shades in this palette are (anticlockwise from top left):
- light-to-medium muted reddish pink, moderately pigmented, velvety matte
- medium-depth medium-to-warm red, moderately-to-intensely pigmented, with pearly shimmer
- medium-to-dark red-toned brown, moderately-to-intensely pigmented, velvety matte
- medium-depth medium-to-warm gold, moderately-to-intensely pigmented, softly shimmery
The red and the gold have multi-hued light-reflective particles. (The pink and the brown also contain a very slight hint of shimmer, but it doesn’t look obvious on the eyes.) All the four shades are easy to apply and blend, and they all have a good staying power.
The pink goes on quite considerably darker and more reddish than how it looks in the pan. It creates some depth and it works for me as a light-to-medium (towards medium) shadowing shade. (It is certainly not like the typical pale off-white shades in some of SUQQU’s other eyeshadow palettes.)
The red and the gold are fairly similar in depth. They work very well with each other, and they both work well for me as shadowing shades. The red is not an everyday eyeshadow shade for me (I didn’t expect it to be), but I do like its medium-to-warm tone, its medium color depth and its vibrancy. Also, it works very well with the pink and the two shades create a seamless gradation. The gold is slightly darker than the usual gold-toned neutral shades I go for, but it is not too dark for me as a shadowing shade. Its medium-to-warm tone suits my complexion.
The brown is not intensely dark but it is dark enough to work for me as an eyelining shade. With its red tone, it coordinates well with the red and the pink. In terms of staying power, it works better for me than the charcoal black in Designing Color Eyes in 07 Hisuikou.
(Kit A also includes Glow Touch Eyes in 106 Onkogare (グロウ タッチ アイズ 106 温焦/ 晶采艷光眼彩蜜 106 温焦, 3.5g (mini size)), Flawless Lip Gloss in 108 Kokihi (フロウレス リップ グロス 108 深緋/ 晶采淨妍唇蜜 108 深緋, 3g (mini size)) and Original Pouch A (オリジナル ポーチ A/ 假日晶采包 A). Glow Touch Eyes in 106 Onkogare is a moderately-pigmented warm brown with a softly sparkly finish, and Flawless Lip Gloss in 108 Kokihi is a semi-sheer medium-to-dark red with no shimmer.)
Overall I like this palette. With two main shadowing shades (plus the pink, which also creates depth) and three different finishes, the palette is quite versatile. It has certainly been fun to try different placements of the red and the gold to see the different ways they can work together.
