In 2015, I reviewed Shiseido Maquillage Dramatic Rouge in RS329 Rose Rendezvous. Dramatic Rouge was replaced by Dramatic Rouge EX in 2018, and today I will be sharing my thoughts on RS377 Faint Smile.
Shiseido Maquillage Dramatic Rouge EX in RS377 Faint Smile (資生堂 マキアージュ ドラマティックルージュ EX RS377 フェイントスマイル/ 資生堂 心機星魅蜜光圈唇膏 RS377, ¥2800) was released in Japan for the holiday 2018 season (when the Dramatic Rouge EX range was launched with seven shades). (Four additional shades were released in summer 2019.) It is a moderately-pigmented medium-to-dark (towards medium) warm red-toned rose with a subtly glossy finish. It has a very slight hint of fine and sparse shimmer which doesn’t look obvious on the lips. (See notes on the product name at the end of this post.)
It glides on the lips easily, and the lips feel very conditioned for most parts of the wear. Both the color and the finish have a good staying power.
A couple of layers of the product create a translucent look with sufficient color intensity, and additional layers increase the color intensity and the opacity considerably. (It doesn’t melt as quickly (to dispense the color) on my lips as Dramatic Rouge in RS329, and this is one of the reasons why it is easier to adjust the coverage.)
When the color does eventually start to fade towards the end of wear, it fades very evenly. There is virtually no patchiness or unevenness in coverage.
While the positive qualities of this product do appeal to me a lot, the shade itself is slightly too red-toned for me. Shade-wise, I prefer Dramatic Rouge in RS329, which is less red-toned and more muted.
(The English name “Dramatic Melting Rouge EX” is printed on the box of the product. For the sake of consistency regarding English translations of product names in Japanese, I am adopting the direct translation of the original product name in Japanese. The two names refer to the same product.)
