Unfortunately, this will be the last seasonal makeup collection from Chicca. (Correction on November 5th, 2019: This is not the last seasonal collection from Chicca (even though the brand’s products are being phased out).) According to the brand’s official website, all the products will be gradually phased out from fall this year and some of them may be available until fall 2020 via authorized on-line retailers. Please refer to the official statement (released today) from the brand’s official website (in Japanese, English and Mandarin (Simplified Chinese)) for more information.
If you are planning to purchase the brand’s products in Japan, do refer to the Shop List page (in Japanese and English) for information on upcoming retail point closures. (The Mandarin version of the brand’s official website lists the retail points in English.) According to the current information on the page, the brand’s counter at Hankyu Umeda in Osaka will be closed on September 30th.
After the brand celebrated its 10th anniversary last year, I am a little surprised at the news of the discontinuation. Some people might assume that it is only down to unsatisfactory sales, but I think there might be other factors. Kanebo launched the namesake KANEBO brand in 2016, and it appears that the company has been building it up as a flagship brand in the high-end sector by steadily increasing its visibility in Japan and overseas. Although Chicca is more of a niche brand (in relative terms within Kanebo’s portfolio), KANEBO and Chicca (and perhaps SUQQU, also owned by Kanebo) do have fairly similar images and targeted consumers. Perhaps Kanebo simply needed to make a decision on the future of the brand and of the direction of the company.
I have been following Chicca since its start. Even though I don’t have a lot of experiences with the brand, the experiences I do have (regarding both products and services) are very positive. For me, the aesthetics and the quality of the brand are quintessentially Japanese, and it will be a pity to see the brand leave the Japanese beauty scene.
