Excel is a popular drugstore beauty line in Japan, and, today, in my Stash Debut series, I will be sharing my thoughts on the line’s Skinny Rich Shadow in SR01 Beige Brown. (Here, “skinny” (“スキニー”) means “skin-like” or “skin-tonal”.)
Like NewBorn, which I wrote about earlier, Excel is a beauty line from Sana. The line mainly carries base and point (color) makeup items, and Skinny Rich Shadow and Powder & Pencil Eyebrow EX are among the line’s most popular items. The line just launched Real Clothes Shadow, a new range of eyeshadow palettes, in Japan earlier this month.
Sana Excel Skinny Rich Shadow in SR01 Beige Brown (サナ エクセル スキニーリッチシャドウ SR01 ベージュブラウン/ Sana Excel 裸色深邃眼影 SR01 名媛杏棕, ¥1500) was released in Japan in fall 2015 (when the Skinny Rich Shadow range was launched with four variations (in SR01-SR04)). (All the four variations are still available. The line also released SR05 (regular variation) in August 2016, SR06 (regular variation) in August 2017 and SR07 and SR08 (limited editions) in March this year.) The four shades in this variation are (clockwise from top left):
- pale-to-light beige with a gold tone, lightly pigmented, moderately shimmery
- light beige with a subtle peach tone, lightly-to-moderately pigmented, with soft pearly shimmer
- dark brown, moderately-to-intensely pigmented, with a subtle pearly glow
- medium-depth copper brown, moderately pigmented, with pearly shimmer
All the four shades have multi-hued light-reflective particles. They are all very easy to apply and blend, and they all have a good staying power. (The pale-to-light beige, the light beige and the medium-depth copper brown go on warmer than they look in the pan. The gold, peach and copper tones of the three shades (respectively) don’t look very obvious in the pan.)
The pale-to-light beige works well as a base shade. It is not overly shimmery for me, and I like its gold tone. The light beige adds a hint of depth to the eyes. I like its subtle depth and how it helps create a seamless gradation from the pale-to-light beige to the copper brown, but I would prefer it to be less peach-toned and more gold-toned.
The medium-depth copper brown works well for me as a shadowing shade, and I like its color depth and finish. It can start to look a little orange-toned towards the end of wear (whether it is layered on top of the light beige (which has a peach tone) or not), but this is not a huge issue for me. The dark brown works well as an eyelining shade. Even though it is neither intensely dark nor intensely pigmented, it is still an effective eyelining shade that doesn’t require too much layering.
Overall I like the palette. The four shades work well together, and a seamless gradation can be achieved with relative ease. The warm-toned hues generally work fairly well on me, and they create a sensual and feminine look. Based on how this palette performs on me, I can certainly see why this range has been popular.
