Chanel Rouge Coco Gloss 792 Aphrodite Spring 2018 Makeup 1

It is interesting to see that sheer blue-tinted lip glosses have been far more popular in the last couple of years than they were in 2007 (when I wrote about them for the first time). (See another post from 2011. Again, they were not as popular then.) It seems that RMK’s Lip Jelly Gloss in 03 Baby Blue from holiday 2015 was at least partially responsible for starting a trend in East Asia, and quite a few beauty brands followed it. (See my makeup trend report from fall 2017.)

In 2011, I wrote about Chanel‘s Lèvres Scintillantes in 387 Wish (a blue-tinted lip gloss from the beautiful Tokyo Happening makeup collection in 2009) in the From My Treasure Chest series, and today I will be focusing on Rouge Coco Gloss in 792 Aphrodite from the brand’s spring 2018 Neapolis: New City makeup collection.

Chanel Rouge Coco Gloss in 792 Aphrodite (シャネル ルージュ ココ グロス 792 アフロディーテ/ 香奈兒 水晶糖光透唇釉 792 藍色夏威夷, £28) is a sheer medium-depth medium-to-warm blue with a glossy finish. It contains no shimmer. The consistency of the product is slightly on the thick side but this does not bother me. The color has a decent staying power and the finish has a fairly good staying power.

One layer of the product leaves a faint hint of blue and creates a nice watery gloss on the lips. It doesn’t leave the lips looking too blueish or bruised. It mainly makes the lips look very slightly darker and more muted. With additional layers, the color can be very slightly intensified but the level of glossiness more or less remains the same.

The product features a relatively large sponge applicator. It feels comfortable on the lips, but I generally prefer a brush applicator and a spatula applicator (for more efficient layering).

(Rouge Coco Gloss was launched in spring 2017, and its packaging is slightly different from that of Lèvres Scintillantes. The gold band around Rouge Coco Gloss is more narrow. Also, the tube of Rouge Coco Gloss has very slightly flatter sides and very slightly more angular edges. The two products have the same length.)

Among my blue lip glosses that are meant to be sheer, this one is among the ones that are slightly less sheer. However, it certainly still adds dimension and translucency to the lips. While I like the glossy finish, I would prefer the color to be slightly lighter and slightly warmer. (Having said that, I do like looking at the shade in the tube. I find it quite soothing.) I think it might work better when it is layered over a lipstick. (I haven’t tried this as I almost never wear a lip gloss (blue-tinted or otherwise) over a lipstick.)

(It seems that this trend will continue for a while. Jill Stuart made sure to include a blue lip gloss in its Birth Gem Gloss lineup, and the brand’s upcoming summer 2018 makeup collection features Forever Juicy Oil Rouge Tint in 08, a blue-toned one.)
