Launched this month, Jo Malone London‘s limited-edition Sugar & Spice Collection draws inspiration from mouth-watering sugary treats and explores a variety of gourmand fragrance notes. This whimsical collection serves up five scents, and today I am taking you through three of them: Elderflower & Gooseberry, Ginger Biscuit, and Bitter Orange & Chocolate.
Elderflower & Gooseberry Cologne features notes of elderflower, gooseberry, and lychee. Soft and delicate, it is gently floral, sweet, and powdery. It doesn’t have a strong base, and the scent remains delicate throughout the wear. Compared with many of Jo Malone London’s other compositions, it may lack a distinctive identity.
Ginger Biscuit Cologne features notes of ginger, nutmeg, cinnamon, caramel, hazelnut, tonka bean, and vanilla. For me, the most pronounced notes in the composition are cinnamon, caramel, and vanilla. The ginger note is only apparent in the beginning as it provides a subtle lift, and it retreats to the background fairly quickly. I wish the ginger note had a stronger presence, as I think it would make the scent more intriguing and dimensional. On the whole, it is a warm scent with a hint of smokiness.
Bitter Orange & Chocolate features notes of bitter orange, cocoa, coconut, and coumarin. The sharp bitter orange note provides a dramatic start, and the intensely nutty and smoky cocoa note soon follows. As the scent develops, the sharp and intense combination of bitter orange and cocoa, which is a good representation of the orange chocolate flavor, is subtly rounded by the milkiness of the coconut. Among the three scents, this is the warmest, deepest, and the most intense one. For me, it is a suitable scent for autumn and winter.
Jo Malone London’s Sugar & Spice Collection also includes Redcurrant & Cream and Lemon Tart. The five scents are available in 30ml and are priced at £38 in the UK.
