Launched this month, Jo Malone‘s latest fragrance, Blackberry & Bay Cologne, paints an idyllic picture of picking and gathering fresh blackberries and bay leaves. It aims to capture the memories of the innocent childhood.
Blackberry & Bay Cologne features notes of blackberry, grapefruit, bay, delicate floral accord, vetiver, and cedarwood. I would characterize this scent as an aromatic green.
The fresh fruitiness leads the rest of the notes but doesn’t linger for long. The warmth of the scent quickly surfaces, and it comes predominantly from the note of bay leaves. The note is obvious from the start and it plays a key role in the entire composition. The floral notes are far from apparent. The subtle hint of cedarwood emerges as part of the drydown and adds a touch of depth to the scent.
The development of the scent is minimal. The note of bay leaves lasts throughout the wear and is very subtly bookended by blackberry and cedarwood. Personally, I would have liked to see the blackberry note figure more prominently and to see how its tartness would interact with the warmth of the bay leaves.
As a cologne, the scent is quite long-lasting.
Many vegetal scents tend to be light and fresh, but Blackberry & Bay is warm, aromatic, and richly herbaceous. This is another creation from Jo Malone that has a clear identity. Overall its warmth makes it a very suitable autumnal scent, but it may be quite a strong scent if aromatic or herbaceous tones don’t appeal to you.
Jo Malone Blackberry & Bay Cologne is available in 30ml (£38) and 100ml (£76). The Blackberry & Bay range also features Body Crème (175ml, £48), Body & Hand Wash (250ml, £30), and Home Candle (200g, £38).
