Olay carries quite a few product lines, including Regenerist, Definity, Professional, and Essentials (a new line that combines the existing Classic Care and Complete Care sub-lines). My chosen moisturizers for day and night are from the Complete Care sub-line (Daily Sensitive UV Fluid SPF 15 (renamed Sensitive Day Fluid SPF 15 under the new Essentials line) and Night Enriched Cream, respectively). Today I am featuring a new item from the Total Effects line, Total Effects Sensitive Protection SPF 15.
Total Effects Sensitive Protection SPF 15 has a rich lotion consistency that doesn’t feel heavy, and it spreads very well on the skin. Some of the main moisturizing ingredients in this product are glycerin, propylene glycol, cocoa butter, squalane, and caprylic/capric triglyceride.
The product uses ethylhexyl salicylate and octocrylene as anti-UVB ingredients and butyl methoxydibenzoylmethane as the anti-UVA ingredient. This means the product is able to offer full-spectrum sun protection. (Octocrylene also helps stabilize butyl methoxydibenzoylmethane.)
The product contains antioxidants such as tocopheryl acetate (vitamin E), tocopherol (vitamin E), sodium ascorbyl phosphate (vitamin C), camellia sinensis (green tea) leaf extract, and hippophae rhamnoides (sea buckthorn) fruit juice.
It contains allantoin as an anti-irritant. Sodium ascorbyl phosphate (vitamin C) and camellia sinensis (green tea) leaf extract also function as anti-irritants.
The product contains niacinamide (vitamin B3), which is a cell-communicating ingredient. According to Paula Begoun, niacinamide “has been shown to increase ceramide and free fatty acid levels in skin, prevent skin from losing water content, and stimulate microcirculation in the dermis”. It is a great ingredient for the skin, and many moisturizers from Olay (including the two I use) contain it.
It is alcohol-free and fragrance-free. It contains benzyl alcohol, which in itself can be irritating. But it is towards the end of the ingredient list and it is unlikely to cause irritation.
Overall, with ingredients to protect against both UVA and UVB rays as well as a wealth of antioxidants and anti-irritants, this is a very well-formulated daytime moisturizer and it should suit those with normal or slightly dry skin. (It is more emollient than Olay Essentials Complete Care Sensitive Day Fluid SPF 15 (my current daytime moisturizer), which is more suitable for oilier skin types.)
(Some ingredient information is based on Paula Begoun’s Cosmetic Ingredient Dictionary.)
