Without a doubt, blue is one of the trend colors for fall 2011. Compared with gray from spring 2011, blue can often offer the same depth but with more vibrancy. This season, it is more about an intense smoky look with blue, but there are also softer alternatives.
A bright cobalt blue, NARS‘ Single Eyeshadow in Outremer (below) is one of the most striking blues of fall 2011. Its matte finish and high pigmentation level will surely please those who go for a bolder look.

Givenchy‘s fall 2011 Je Veux la Lune makeup collection features Les Ombres de Lune in 2 Mordoree (right in photo below). I do like the contrast between the pale yellow and the deep blue. (Darker blues have been growing on me as eyelining shades.)

Of course, we also have to take a look at Dior‘s fall 2011 Blue Tie makeup collection. The limited-edition Dior Blue Tie in 001 Smoking Blue includes three dark blues and a silvery gray. (I got it a couple of days ago and I will review it a little later.) Blue is also featured in 3-Colors Smoky in 291 Smoky Navy, 5-Colors Eyeshadow in 214 Blue Ribbons, Dior Vernis in 607 Blue Denim, and Dior Vernis in 908 Tuxedo.

If you think some of the blues above are too intense, there are softer options from Japanese brands. Addiction‘s fall 2011 Aurora Reflection makeup collection includes Eyeshadows in Ice Storm (described as an icy blue) and Blue Moon.

SUQQU‘s fall 2011 makeup collection features Blend Color Eyeshadow in 08 Mizuaoi. It includes a light blue, which can be used in the under-eye areas to brighten up the eyes, as well as a dark navy blue.
Compared with purples and neutrals, blue is not a color I wear as often, but I do find certain shades of blue very flattering. (I tend to go for lighter aqua blues to brighten the eyes and very dark blues to line the eyes.) What shades of blue do you go for?

LOVE the mint shadow and lilac lips for Addiction. I’ve been enjoying a lilac pout for numerous months now, nice to see it in print.
Hmm, I agree with you, blue is not a colour I use often. As green and purple is more flattering, I gobble those up.
I DO love my Korres liner in Blue Petrol. It’s a very inky, deep blue. And Urban Decay’s liquid liner, a bright blue – similar to Outremer – is also very fun.
Hi Christy,
I quite like the lilac lips as well…:) As you know, I am in my green phase for eyes, but I haven’t tried pairing green eyes with lilac lips. The combination seems daring…
I have to be quite careful with blues. The right tones and depths of blue can be really flattering. (Ashy grayish blues don’t tend to suit me. Lighter blues are good, but very pale off-white blues are not.) It seems that Blue Petrol could be a good eyeliner for me too. :)
Thank you for stopping by again! :)
I love blue!
Unfortunately, while I look great in dark blue clothes, I do find it weird on my eyes. It makes my hazel iris look yellow?
A dark blue liner is still okay, and sometimes, I go for a bit teal-ish blue in summer.
As for winter, I use Coffret d’Or’s Beauty C Curve Eyes in the blue/grey variation because it fits my favourite winter skirt. :)
Thanks for summing up all those trends!
The purplish lipstick in the Addict ad shocked me a bit…
Hi Julia,
The purple/green look on the left does seem daring, but I find it quite appealing in a way…
Teal blue is my guilty pleasure. It doesn’t really suit me, but I just love the color. I tend to play with it at home only…:)
Out of the eye palettes I have, my Lavshuca Eye Color Select in BU-1 (which I know you have as well :)) is probably the closest to your Beauty C Curve Eyes in 03 Monotone Blue. The blues in BU-1 are very pretty!
Thank you for posting your comment again! :)
Dear PJ,
I’m not saying I hate the purple lip, it just shocked me a little. ^^; (It’s definitely not something I could wear at work.)
Actually, the blue in the Coffret d’or palette is almost the same as the one in Lavshuca’s BU-1. (Btw, I managed to score PU-1 on an blogsale! <3) I did side by side swatches and felt a bit upset. xD But they are both very pretty, true! But you really don't need them both.
I seem to be able to wear teal, but it does feel a bit bold for every day. Did you try Majolica's fall palette from last year? The gold makes the teal stand out quite nicely.
Have a nice rest of the week!
Dear Julia,
No, I didn’t think that you disliked it. :) It did surprise me a little bit as well.
Thank you for letting me know the comparison between the two. As for PU-1, it wasn’t a color combination that I would consider at the time (in 2007) but I would buy it now without too much thinking. (I know it has been discontinued…:(…)
I haven’t tried the Majolica Majorca palette, but I certainly think that the teal and the gold can look very striking together.
Enjoy your weekend! :)
It’s a nice change from the more purple and violet looks that have been coming out for the past couple of autumns. Chanel’s also joining in the party with their exclusive trio of blue polishes!
Hi Ebontien,
I saw Les Jeans de Chanel collection as well. They would go so well with the blue eye makeup looks…
Yes, blue is a good change from the purples, even though (you know) I do like purples. I am already wondering what the trend colors will be for fall 2012…
Thank you for posting your comment again! :)
For some reason I haven’t find any method to apply deep blue shadows that I feel flatter my skintone. Always ended up like having panda eyes or blue black skin when I use blue shadows…
I have a lot of teals and lighter blues though! And totally adore those babyblue with green tint (robin egg, I think that’s how some ppl call it?).
Hi Tee,
I like light warm blues too! :)
I have similar issues with deep blues over larger areas on my eyes, but I have found that they can work well for me as eyelining shades. I usually apply them very close to the upper lashlines. (I very rarely line my lower lashlines with dark colors.) They are able to add a good amount of definition without being too harsh.
Thank you very much for posting your comment! :)
