Last year, Maison Martin Margiela launched it first fragrance, (Untitled). The stellar creation combines the cool and dry citrus green sensation and the woody and smoky warmth. It is one of the few smoky scents that appeal to me. This year, the fashion house launched a lighter version of the scent, (Untitled) L’Eau.
(Untitled) L’Eau features notes of mandarin orange, lemon, crushed leaves, curly-leafed mint, and buchu. It is predominantly a citrus green scent with hints of woodiness and smokiness.
Compared with (Untitled), it is less bitter, smoky and incensey. It is generally lighter and the top notes are more sparkling. It starts with a sharp burst of lemon and it is then gently rounded and balanced with a touch of woodiness and smokiness. The drydown is not too dissimilar to that of the original. It is subtly dry and smoky.
It is less angular and marginally more mellow than the original but it doesn’t compromise the overall personality of the (Untitled) series. It has the same depth and clarity.
The design of the bottle is in keeping with that of the original. All the details that reflect the aesthetics and craftsmanship of the fashion house (the paint effect, the thread work and the typewriter font) are still there.
Overall it is a refreshing citrusy scent with a great deal of class and sophistication, and it is not one of the typical summer fragrance releases which can sometimes be too sweet and syrupy. It succeeds in striking a balance between creating wearability and maintaining the unique character.
Maison Martin Margiela (Untitled) L’Eau is available in eau de toilette in 100ml. In the UK, it is exclusive to Selfridges London & Manchester, Fenwick Newcastle, and House of Fraser Birmingham & Glasgow.
