If there is one word that sums up the makeup trends for fall 2008, it is “warmth”. We had grey from fall 2007 and cool lilac and blue from spring 2008, and now we are greeted by opulent gold and red.
Fields of Gold
Chanel leads the pack with a collection with gold in the eye palette, lip gloss, face highlighter, and nail color. It is a decadent shade of gold, although it can be too warm for some complexions. If this is the case with you, items from Lavshuca (Grade Color Select in GD-1) and Shiseido The Makeup (Lip Gloss in G29 Mellow Gold) might suit you better.
Gold is also seen in Vernis Crème de Nacres, two nail products in Lancôme‘s fall 2008 collection that are applied with a special applicator. (I am not entirely certain whether they are sold in North America, but they are already available in the UK.)
Shades of Red
If you are fans of purples, there are still some nice shades from Givenchy, Clarins, Awake and Sonia Rykiel as these beautiful hues continue the trend in spring 2008. But many purples are taking on a much warmer tone for fall 2008 and turning into plum purples. We are also seeing shades of burgundy and red, which, just like gold, are the key shades for this fall.
For plum and burgundy, which still somewhat echo the spring trend, look into the palettes from Laura Mercier, EST, and Magie Deco:

While warmer reds are seen in major Japanese brands (like Lunasol and SUQQU below), Dior, always a trendsetter, features a muted warm red in 5-Colour Eyeshadow in #673 Earth Tones:

Mix & Match
If you love experimenting with makeup trends, why not try wearing gold and warm purples/reds to sport both trends at the same time?
If reds around the eyes don’t suit you, try gold with deep cool violets. It is a beautiful and modern way to wear violets. I am thinking about trying the items below:

Last but not least, the two makeup looks for fall/holiday 2008 from Shiseido The Makeup epitomise the key trends for the coming seasons:

wow! i’ve been collecting gold and reddish-purple-pink palettes! and i’m so glad to know i’m on the right track! :D
ah~ so many things to buy~~~~~ :D
Hey I like this season and I am so ready for it! I do have plum gloss, cool red lip color and a plummy purple palette!
I am most happy about the plum lip color trend, I knew it since I was little that plum/red and plummy red will look good on me from the various adventure in my mom’s dressing table…(I remember so well that I broke my mom’s a plum lipstick when I was playing with the goodies and she was so mad…can’t forget that.)
I guess I will skip the gold shadow
part since those pigmented bronze/gold color wash me out…I will use some blusher in golden pink on my lid if I want a wash of color, the pink in them always disappear on my face anyway …
Beside the plum, I would definitely some green, sage, moss or even the bright ones. (Since where I live is sunny and warm most of the time) green is my favorite color and there is no way I am passing it just because it’s no “en vogue”.

Hi Plue,
It sounds that you are right on trend! I think there will be many things to tempt you this season. Do stay calm and in control! :)
Thank you for stopping by again! :)
Hi Mina,
It is great that some of this season’s trends are appealing to you. Plums are definitely good shades for lips I think.
If you don’t like wearing gold all over the lids, I think you can probably try pairing them with your favorite colors and see what they can do for you.
I am not sure if you wear greens on the eyes and plums on the lips at the same time. I am thinking that it might not be for everyone, but I also think it can actually look very stunning if we coordinate the shades to suit our complexions. (Indeed, if a color really suits you, who cares if it is not on trend?)
Thank you for your comment again! :)
I’m absolutely looking forward to the Chanel collection. Do you know if the ‘Les Tissages de Chanel blushers’ are out yet? I’m dying to get my hand on a palette
Hi, great trend report! Where can I find cool or platinum golds?
Ha…
I never dare to try green eyes red lip altogether, (it’s a little bit too early for Christmas) I can’t pull off more than two color on my face. Maybe a sage green eyeliner and a plum gloss would be alright…
Chances are, most of the time I can’t even stand myself using two items, if I use blusher, I just have to ditch lip gloss and everything else…I am just better off that way.
Now I think of it, I do have a trio with light gold and seafoam green (with gold shimmer) the combo looks very fresh for summer time, and I will probably wear it in the fall anyway…
P.S. Thanks for linking my page, I feel little guilty since I was just about to announce that I am a Stila convert already…(Having recently murdered two Anna Sui eye color single for putting in stila shadow pan…)
Mina
Hi Cinammon,
I am looking forward to Les Tissages de Chanel as well. I am not really sure when they will be out, but I am guessing that we’ll be seeing them in September (between the fall and holiday collections).
Thank you very much for reading my blog and posting your comment! :)
Hi Denim,
Thank you for your question.
Cool golds shouldn’t be too hard to find. In the photos featured in my report, the golds seen in Magie Deco, Maquillage (Forming Shiny Eyes in 52), and Lavshuca are cool golds, as opposed to the more bronze/orangey golds in Chanel’s fall 2008 collection.
Hope it helps, and thank you for reading my blog. :)
Hi Mina,
You are very welcome about the link. You do have far more Anna Sui items than I do, so it would be great if some of my readers could have a look at your collection!
I’d love to read about your thoughts on Stila as well. So far it has not been one of my favorite brands, but your thoughts are always worth the time.
You seem to have a minimalistic and less-is-more approach to makeup, which I think is great!
Thank you for stopping by again, and have a very good week! :)
