Kanebo launched KANEBO (Global Brand) in fall 2016. (Take a look at a brief profile on the brand here.) One of the items from the brand’s debut lineup that caught my attention is Variant Brosse (Cheeks), and I decided to try 02 Pink Petal.

KANEBO Variant Brosse (Cheeks) in 02 Pink Petal (カネボウ ヴァリアンブラッセ (チークス) 02 Pink Petal/ 佳麗寶 雙彩混合腮紅 02 Pink Petal, ¥5500 (refill ¥2500, case (Face Color Compact) ¥2000, brush (Face Color Brush) ¥1000)) was released in Japan in fall 2016 (when the Variant Brosse (Cheeks) range was launched with two variations (in 01 Coral Petal and 02 Pink Petal)). (In Japan, the brand also released 03 Red Petal in spring 2017, 04 Brick Petal in fall 2018 and 05 Orange Petal in spring 2019.) The two shades in this palette are:

  • light-to-medium medium-to-cool pink, lightly-to-moderately pigmented, subtly satiny with a hint of fine shimmer
  • cream white, lightly pigmented, softly pearly

Both shades in this palette have multi-hued light-reflective particles. They are both easy to apply and blend, and they both have a good staying power.

According to the suggested application method from KANEBO’s official Japanese website, the cream white can be applied on the outer-eye areas and above and on the upper parts of the cheekbones and it can also be layered over the areas where the blusher shade is applied.

The light-to-medium pink is a very natural color. It can easily be applied light-handedly to create a soft wash of color, and it can be layered for more color saturation. Its subtly satiny finish is also very natural. It is not entirely matte and it does not have any obvious sheen or glow. (The hint of fine shimmer doesn’t look obvious on the cheeks.) It is a very skin-like finish, and I find this finish very appealing.

The cream white is not particularly pigmented and it mainly imparts a veil of pearlescence on the skin. The softly pearly finish can emphasize the appearance of pores so I do need to be fairly light-handed with this shade. (A more muted finish is, of course, less likely to emphasize the appearance of pores, but it is often the case that a very slightly more shimmery finish that is more complex and nuanced is also less likely to emphasize the appearance of pores.)

I have also tried mixing the two shades and using the mixed shade as a blusher shade. The cream white doesn’t alter the hue of the light-to-medium pink very much, and the mixed shade has a subtly glowy finish with a veil of shimmer. The finish very slightly emphasizes the appearance of pores, but this is not a huge issue for me. (The finish of the mixed shade looks more flattering on me than that of the cream white itself.)

Overall I do like this palette. The light-to-medium pink is a great everyday blusher shade, and its skin-like finish is certainly the most appealing feature of the palette. Based on some of the comments I have come across on-line, this very natural finish seems to be what many people like about the Variant Brosse (Cheeks) range.
