Released last year, Kanebo Kate‘s 3D Contrasting Cheeks caught my attention. I had not purchased a blusher from the line before, and I decided to go for RS-1 from the range.
Kanebo Kate 3D Contrasting Cheeks in RS-1 (カネボウ ケイト 3Dコントラスティングチークス RS-1/ 佳麗寶 凱婷 明暗雙色腮紅 RS-1, ¥1500) was released in Japan in fall 2017 (when the 3D Contrasting Cheeks range was launched with four variations (in PK-1, OR-1, RD-1 & RS-1)). (OR-2 & RD-2 were released in the holiday 2017 season. All six variations are regular items.) The two shades in this variation are:
- light apricot gold, very lightly pigmented, softly shimmery
- medium-to-warm strawberry pink, with an above-medium pigmentation level, satiny with a hint of shimmer
Both shades contain multi-hued light-reflective particles and are easy to apply and blend. The softly shimmery finish of the light apricot gold has a good staying power, and the medium-to-warm strawberry pink has a fairly good staying power.
According to the application recommendations from the line, the lighter shade is applied on the entire cheek areas as a base shade and the main blusher shade is then applied on the cheekbones.

The light apricot gold is very sheer and goes on my light-to-medium complexion as shimmer. The finish is not overly shimmery, and it is not flat or frosty. It can slightly emphasize the appearance of pores.
The medium-to-warm strawberry pink goes on slightly warmer than it looks in the pan. It is quite pigmented and I have to be fairly light-handed with it. The vibrancy of the color fades over time, but there is still some color left after a twelve-hour wear.
The product comes with a two-way brush (that can be stored in the compact). When spread out, it can be used to apply the base shade, and, when folded, it can be used to apply the main blusher shade. I have only tried using the brush (when it is folded) to apply the base shade as a highlighter on parts of my forehead, the ridge of my nose and my chin (which works quite well).
Overall the product works fairly well for me. I like the satiny finish and the vibrant color of the strawberry pink, but I do wish the rich hue of the strawberry pink lasted a little longer.
