To shape and fill in my eyebrows, I have been using a matte grayish black eyeshadow. (I use it very light-handedly to create a natural look that doesn’t look too defined.) While I have been very happy with it for years, some of the recent 3-in-1 eyebrow products (which feature an eyebrow pencil, an eyebrow powder on a sponge tip and a brush) do look tempting. NewBorn‘s W Brow EX N in B2 Grayish Brown is what I decided to try.
NewBorn is a makeup line from Sana. (Owned by Tokiwa Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd., which is part of the Noevir Group, Sana also features other beauty lines such as Excel, Maikohan, Suhada Kinenbi, Honeyshca and Natural Resource.) Currently, NewBorn carries six items (four eyebrow items, one eyeliner and one mascara). They are:
- W Brow EX N (eyebrow pencil, eyebrow powder & brush)
- Powdery Pencil Brow EX (eyebrow pencil & brush)
- Lasting W Brow EX (liquid eyebrow pen & eyebrow powder)
- Coloring W Brow N (eyebrow pencil & eyebrow mascara)
- W Eyeliner EX (pencil eyeliner & liquid eyeliner)
- W Mascara EX (double-ended mascara)
Sana NewBorn W Brow EX N in B2 Grayish Brown (サナ ニューボーン W ブロウ EX N B2 グレイッシュブラウン/ Sana NewBorn 柔和三用眉彩筆 B2 灰棕色, ¥1200) was released in Japan in fall 2012 (when W Brow EX N was launched). (The product was launched with five shades in fall 2012. Two new shades were released in spring 2015, and one new shade was released in spring 2017. (The information is from www.cosme.net.)) It contains a retractable oval-shaped eyebrow pencil, an eyebrow powder that is loaded on a sponge tip and a screw eyebrow brush.
The pencil in B2 Grayish Brown is a medium-to-dark (towards dark) gray with a hint of brown. I find it to be fairly pigmented and more pigmented than how I expected it to be. It feels smooth and (somewhat unexpectedly) soft on the skin. (It doesn’t pull or drag the skin.) It is fairly easy to apply as it dispenses sufficient pigment with short and light strokes. However, I do need to be light-handed with it. It looks natural and doesn’t look brownish on me, and it has a good staying power.
The powder in B2 Grayish Brown is a medium-depth brown with a light-to-moderate pigmentation level. It is easy to apply, and it has a good staying power. It is too light and too brown-toned for nearly all parts of my eyebrows, and I tend to use it for the heads of my eyebrows only.
The screw eyebrow brush feels soft and doesn’t feel scratchy on the skin. It blends the colors and softens the edges of the colors well.
I have been using the pencil and the powder in different ways, and, for me, the best way to use the two is to use the pencil to shape and fill in all parts of the eyebrows except the heads and to use the powder for the heads. The pencil creates a natural look in terms of both the color tone and the color depth, and the powder, being less pigmented, lighter and more skin-tonal, also makes the heads of the eyebrows look natural. (Personally, I don’t think the heads of the eyebrows should look defined.)
Overall, the product performs fairly well on me. However, I find the application quite time-consuming. (I do like the efficiency of an eyebrow powder.) Also, for me, an eyebrow powder generally creates an even more natural look.
