It has been a while since I reviewed eyeshadows from Majolica Majorca. (Read my review of the line’s Majolook (Illuminator) in BR788 here.) Today I will be sharing my thoughts on Jeweling Eyes in GD886.
Shiseido Majolica Majorca Jeweling Eyes in GD886 (資生堂 マジョリカ マジョルカ ジュエリングアイズ GD886 見えっぱり/ 資生堂 戀愛魔鏡 魔幻流光眼影盒 GD886 美貌, ¥1500) was released in summer 2009 (when the Jeweling Eyes range was launched). It features a cream white, an off-white yellow, a medium-depth brown gray and a medium-to-dark brown. All the shades have multi-hued light-reflective particles.
The cream white is designed to be used as a highlighter for the brow bones and the inner corners of the eyes. I haven’t used this shade to highlight the inner corners of the eyes, but, for the brow bones, I think the shade is a little too sparkly. (It is mostly shimmer and doesn’t contain much pigment.) I tend to use it on the middle parts of the upper eyelids to add extra dimension to the eyes.
The off-white yellow, with pearly shimmer, is designed to be used as a base. It is fairly sheer and it doesn’t look particularly yellow-y or too shimmery when worn. It works decently as a base.
There are a few issues with the medium-depth brown gray. Firstly, although it looks like a golden bronze in the pan, the actual color when worn is a brown gray. The pigment itself is mostly gray-toned, and a lot of the bronze hue you see in the photos is the predominant shade of the larger shimmering particles. The shade of the pigment itself is too cool-toned for me.
Secondly, the larger (predominantly bronze-toned) particles don’t adhere to the skin well. During application (with a brush), there is quite a bit of fallout with them, and most of the others are pushed to the edges of the areas of application. (They don’t fall off or travel as much when I use the sponge applicator that comes with the palette, but it is still fairly difficult to distribute them evenly.) The result is a shimmery finish that looks uneven. (The shade also contains fine multi-hued shimmer, which you can see in the photo above. There is no issue with its adherence to the skin.)
Thirdly, the shade is on the sheer side and building up the color intensity with it to create definition for the eyes takes time. (I mind this less since the shade doesn’t really suit me.)
The medium-to-dark brown is moderately pigmented and it is not pigmented enough for me as an eyelining shade. Also, I wish the shade were a little darker. Like the medium-depth brown gray, there is quite a bit of layering with this shade.
The palette creates a subtle look that is daytime-appropriate, and the finished look (quite surprisingly) has a good lasting power. (The bronze-toned shimmer that stays on the eyelids after application lasts a whole day with minimal fallout and traveling.)
Overall I am disappointed with this palette. The shadowing shade is too cool-toned for me and its pigment-shimmer separation makes blending tricky. Both the shadowing shade and the eyelining shade are not pigmented enough for me, which makes the application time-consuming, and the eyelining shade is not dark enough for me to create sufficient definition for the eyes.
