After THREE was launched in Taiwan earlier this month, another exciting Japanese beauty line, Les Merveilleuses de Ladurée, will be joining the Taiwanese beauty scene next month. (The beauty line of this French confectionery brand is mostly manufactured in Japan (by Kosé-owned Albion).)
The markup of the product prices in Taiwan (based on the current exchange rate) is about 40%. (This is based on the Japanese product prices plus the 8% sales tax in Japan, which will come into effect in April (an increase from the current 5%).) This is almost bizarrely high, as, if there is any markup at all, it is 5%-10% for most major Japanese brands. (Some Japanese beauty products are even slightly cheaper in Taiwan.)
I don’t think it is a coincident that the two beauty lines are launched in Taiwan at this time of year. The annual Mother’s Day event in department stores in Taiwan, which starts about a month before Mother’s Day (May 11th this year), is approaching. With mouthwatering GWPs and value sets (which can differ from week to week and even from day to day to keep customers coming back), this is the best time to purchase beauty products in Taiwan in the first half of the year. I am sure the two lines will take full advantage of this opportunity. (The department store anniversary events, taking place in overlapping relay from October to December, are the highlights of the second half of the year.)
Les Merveilleuses de Ladurée will be available at Sogo Department Store (Zhongxiao Branch) in Taipei from April 1st.
With the large variety and generally reasonable prices, Taiwan continues to be the best place to buy Japanese cosmetics outside Japan.
Currently, France is the only country outside Asia where Les Merveilleuses de Ladurée is available. (See more information here.)
