SUQQU continues its 10th anniversary celebration with a limited-edition makeup collection for fall 2013. This collection is noticeably more colorful than most of the brand’s previous seasonal collections, and today I am reviewing Blend Color Eyeshadow in EX-17 Hatsushimo and Face Color Palette in EX-03.
Blend Color Eyeshadow in EX-17 Hatsushimo (¥7140 in Japan, £45 in the UK) is one of the three Blend Color Eyeshadow palettes released for fall 2013. The five shades in this palette are (clockwise from top-left):
– off-white pink, lightly-to-moderately pigmented, glowy with subtle shimmer
– medium-depth moss green, moderately pigmented, pearly with shimmer
– light pink, lightly pigmented, subtly glowy with very fine shimmer
– dark navy blue, pigmented, velvety matte
– light-to-medium orchid purple, moderately pigmented, shimmery with fine sparkles
All the light-reflective particles are multi-hued. All the colors are easy to apply and blend, and they have a good staying power.
According to the application instructions on SUQQU’s website, the off-white pink is a highlighter for the brow bones and the under-eye areas, the light pink is a base color for the eyelids (worn underneath the shadowing color), the moss green is the main shadowing color, the dark navy blue is the eyelining color, and the orchid purple is an accent color that is applied on the outer 1/3 of the upper eyelids just above the eyelining color. (See the illustration from SUQQU below.)
With pink, green, blue, and purple, this is one of the most colorful eyeshadow palettes from SUQQU. When worn according to the instructions above, the palette creates a sophisticated look. (With a gray undertone, the moss green has a low-key feel.) You can also wear the orchid purple as the main shadowing shade and this will create a more vibrant look.
The off-white pink does not look frosty and the light pink (which can also be used as a highlighter) works nicely as a base. Without looking harsh, the dark navy blue adds a bit of drama to the eyes as an eyelining shade.
The highlight of the palette for me is, of course, the orchid purple. Compared with the purple in Blend Color Eyeshadow in EX-14 Ruridama for summer 2013, which is a little too light for me as a shadowing color, the purple in EX-14 Hatsushimo has a nice color depth for me as a shadowing shade. Even though orchid-toned purples generally carry a little too much red tone for me, the purple in this palette is still one of the most beautiful purple shades that SUQQU has ever released.
The case of the palette has a gradation look, from pink to black. It has a pearlescent finish. (The pink portion shows a green pearlescence when viewed from certain angles.)
Also in SUQQU’s fall 2013 makeup collection is Face Color Palette in EX-03 (¥7350 in Japan, £50 in the UK). The palette includes a pressed powder and a blusher. The translucent white-toned pressed powder has a matte finish (a pleasant surprise for me) that will create a polished look. It should work well with those with oilier skin types but it shouldn’t look chalky on those with drier skin types.
Velvety with sparse shimmer (which is mainly silver-toned), the lightly-to-moderately pigmented blusher is subtly gradational, from light warm pink to medium warm pink. The shimmer doesn’t look too obvious on the face, and the colors should look very natural on most skin tones.
The pressed powder features very intricate floral motifs. They look very delicate and beautiful. It is a pity that they disappear after a few uses.
The product comes with two brushes. Unlike the two brushes in Face Color Palette in EX-01 from fall 2011, both brushes in this palette are round-shaped. The hair on one brush is slightly longer than that on the other. The case of the palette also features the pink-to-black gradation design.
Overall, apart from the consistently solid quality, these two items showcase what SUQQU can deliver in terms of color, finish, and product presentation, and, personally, this collection is one of my favorites from SUQQU in recent years.
