Kanebo Kate Gradical Eyes A PU-1 Spring 2011 1

Shortly after I purchased Kanebo Kate‘s Gradical Eyes A in GD-1 (my first purchase from this popular Japanese drugstore beauty line), I decided to go for PU-1 from the same range. (It was released in spring 2011.) Today I am sharing my thoughts on this palette.

The five colors in this palette are (from right):

pearly white with a hint of pink-toned lilac (cream-to-powder consistency), lightly pigmented, softly pearly with shimmer
off-white, moderately pigmented, with a fairly high-toned pearly finish
very pale pink-toned lilac, moderately pigmented, with a fairly high-toned pearly finish
light-to-medium lilac, lightly-to-moderately pigmented, subtly pearly
medium-to-dark violet, moderately-to-well pigmented, subtly pearly

All the shades have very fine multi-hued light-reflective particles and a good staying power.

This palette is essentially a combination of four light shades and a vibrant violet. The cream-to-powder base brightens the eye areas by imparting a pearly glow on the eyelids. The three shades in the middle of the palette are all quite light, and only the light-to-medium lilac has a slight depth of color. The violet is fairly striking (it goes on as you see in the pan), although it seems too dark as a shadowing shade and slightly too light as an eyelining shade. It also seems too vibrant as an eyelining shade for daytime wear.

I feel that the overall look is a little too white-ish (as I can only wear the violet very close to my upper lashlines), and I wish the light-to-medium lilac were darker to create some depth for the eyes. For a softer look, I skip the cream-to-powder base. (Without the base underneath, the three light shades in the middle look less light-reflective, the light-to-medium lilac looks marginally darker, and the violet looks less color-saturated.)

This is certainly more of a spring/summer palette and will suit those who want a fresh and brightened look for the eyes. Those who want drama can play with the violet more. However, for me, the palette lacks a medium-depth transitional shade between the dark color and the light ones. It would make the palette much more versatile.
