I currently have four variations of Sofina Aube Couture‘s Designing Impression Eyes, and today I am sharing my thoughts on 552 Brown, which was released in fall 2011. (Read my reviews of 553 Purple (fall 2011), 555 Brown (spring 2012), and 561 Purple (fall 2012).)
The five colors in this palette are (from the lightest to the darkest and then the shade at the bottom):
1. off-white peach, lightly pigmented, gently pearly
2. medium-depth auburn brown, moderately pigmented, pearly with fine shimmer
3. warm medium-to-dark brown, moderately-to-well pigmented, pearly with fine shimmer
4. soft brown black, moderately-to-well pigmented, velvety with fine shimmer
5. pale peach (cream-t0-powder consistency), moderately pigmented, softly pearly and glowy
All the shades have multi-colored light-reflective particles. They all have a smooth texture and a good staying power. (Please see my review of 553 Purple for Aube Couture’s suggested placement of each color.)
I decided to purchase 552 after picking up 555, and I will start with some differences between these two neutral-toned palettes:
– On the whole, 552 is warmer. The medium auburn brown and the medium-to-dark brown are both warmer than their counterparts in 555.
– The medium auburn brown in 552 is darker than its counterpart in 555, and the warm medium-to-dark brown in 552 is lighter than its counterpart in 555 (which is too similar to the eyelining shade in the palette). Overall, the gradation that 552 creates is more even than that from 555.
– As the medium auburn brown in 552 (the main shade in the palette) is darker than its counterpart in 555, 552 creates more depth than 555 (if the two palettes are applied in the same way).
While I like the depth of color in the auburn brown, I feel that it can sometimes look a little too red-toned for me. I wish it had a little more yellow-gold tone.
Compared with the off-whites in 553, 555, and 561, the off-white peach in this palette is the least frosty. I don’t always need to be overly careful with it, but I still do lightly apply it with a fluffy eyeshadow brush.
When I decided to purchase this palette, I thought I would like it more than 555. However, after trying it for several times, I actually find that I like the two more or less equally. (I only very marginally prefer 555.) They certainly work well for the seasons in which they were released (the lighter and fresher 555 for spring and summer and the darker and more luscious 552 for fall and winter).
