For summer 2012, L’Occitane has released a collection of three colognes: Eau Ravissante (floral-based), Eau Universelle (citrus-based), and Eau Captivante (aromatic-based). These light and fresh colognes come in 300ml bottles and can be applied liberally. (They also come in travel-friendly 50ml bottles.) Today I am featuring Eau Universelle Cologne Fraîche.
Top notes: bergamot, grapefruit
Middle notes: petitgrain, geranium
Base notes: woody accord, amber
Despite the additions of floral and woody notes, Eau Universelle is citrusy through and through. The scent is zesty and slightly (and quite pleasantly) bitter to begin with. It then mellows to a softer citrusy tone with a hint of sweetness. The woody and amber notes figure minimally in the composition.
After the initial stage, the scent becomes quite subtle. As an eau de cologne, the staying power is decent. If you would like the scent to last through the day, topping up every couple of hours may be essential.
It is not an overly complex scent and it is certainly not meant to be. This refreshing and cooling scent is very easy to wear and is great for warmer weather.
Do note that this scent contains citrus grandis (grapefruit) peel oil and citrus aurantium bergamia (bergamot) fruit oil (listed separately from fragrance (parfum) on the ingredient list), which some people might find irritating. Wearing the fragrance on skin that is exposed to direct sunlight is not recommended. (This does apply to wearing fragrances in general).
Eau Universelle Cologne Fraîche is available in 300ml (splash-on bottle, £37) and 50ml (spray bottle, £21). The scent is also available in Shower Gel (250ml, £13).
