In contrast to Jo Malone‘s main line of fragrances, which tend to be fresh and crisp, the brand’s Cologne Intense collection features deeper and richer creations. This month, Velvet Rose & Oud Cologne Intense has been released as a limited edition.
The fragrance features notes of Damask rose, oud wood, clove, and praline. It is essentially a floral woody, as the intense oud wood plays the key role and holds the other notes together. The rose note is not overshadowed by the woody aroma and adds a feminine touch to an otherwise fairly masculine composition. (Rather than a rose-toned scent with a woody base, it is better described as a woody scent enriched with a floral flair.)
The fragrance is very long-lasting and the woody character of the scent is consistent throughout the wear.
I don’t usually like predominantly woody scents as they can be too dry and angular for me, but Velvet Rose & Oud does appeal to me. The rose note gently and seamlessly softens the oud wood, while the woody note itself seems to have a rounded milky and smoky tone.
Elegantly weighty but never cumbersome, Velvet Rose & Oud is a deep, mysterious, sensual, and alluring scent that is more suitable for evening wear, and I think both men and women would enjoy wearing it.
Jo Malone Velvet Rose & Oud Cologne Intense (£95) is available in 100ml. The Jo Malone Cologne Intense range also includes Rose Water & Vanilla, Iris & White Musk, Amber & Patchouli, Oud & Bergamot, and Dark Amber & Ginger Lily.
