Over the next few weeks, I will be featuring items from fall 2011 makeup collections from various brands. Today we start with Kanebo Coffret d’Or.
So far, I have been loyal to Coffret d’Or‘s eyeshadow palettes, as I have at least one from each series. The latest 3D Glossy Eyes is from the line’s late summer/ early fall 2011 makeup collection, and I decided to go for 04 Pink Violet.
The four colors in this palette are (anti-clockwise from top left):
– (Highlight Color) off-white, very sheer, with low-tone shimmer
– (Medium Color) pale cool pink, sheer, with sparse shimmer and soft pearlescence
– (Shadow Color) muted aubergine purple, moderately pigmented, with sparse shimmer and a hint of pearlescence
– (3D Gloss Coat) pale yellow, sheer, shimmery
(The names in parentheses are the names given by Coffret d’Or to the shades in the series.)
All the shades have multi-colored shimmer. They all have a fluffy and creamy (almost-wet) texture and a decent staying power.
Even though it was the pink and the purple that caught my eye in the first place, my favorite shade of the palette turned out to be the pale yellow. It has by far the most dimensional finish out of the four, and it is shimmery without being too sparkly. (According to the application instructions (printed on the outer box of the palette), it is layered on top of the entire eyelids and the inner corners of the eyes after all the other shades are applied.)
The pale pink, to be frank, is a little disappointing. Firstly, the shade is quite pale and I really wish it were a little darker so that it could add subtle shading to the eyes. Secondly, I usually apply eyeshadows with eyeshadow brushes and I find that applying this shade with an eyeshadow brush (not the double-ended brush applicator in the palette) to get a decent amount of color is hard work. (Both the color and the finish look considerably less washed-out when I apply it with the sponge applicator in the palette, but I would still prefer the pink to be less pale and less pastel-y.)
(Looking at the swatches of the other variations in this series, I don’t think they have the same issue. The other Medium Colors don’t seem to be as pastel-y as the pink in this palette.)
It is also worth mentioning that when the pale yellow is layered on top of the pink, the combined shade is an off-white pink that looks even paler. (I tend to layer the pale yellow only on the edges of the pink on the upper parts of the eyelids (towards the brow bones).)
The off-white is very sheer even when it is applied with the sponge applicator. The muted purple is the only shade that has a considerable amount of pigment, but, as an eyelining shade, it is still not one of the most pigmented ones I have come across.
As with Eyes Appeal Shadow from spring 2011, the palette itself is released as a refill for Eye Shadow/ Powder Case (L), which is sold separately. I went for the white one last time and I decided to get the black one this time. With the black case, the middle panel is pale gold and the dot details are on the sides.
04 Pink Violet is essentially a palette with three pale shades with one darker eyelining shade. Despite the smooth and creamy texture, I don’t think this is one of my favorite Coffret d’Or palettes. I think I will go back to it from time to time, but I will probably pair it with shades from other palettes that can add a little depth to the eyes.
