Chanel‘s fall 2011 Illusions d’Ombres de Chanel makeup collection puts emphasis on the eyes and pairs intense but sophisticated shades for eyes with natural warm-toned shades for cheeks and lips. In this review, I am featuring Illusion d’Ombre in 83 Illusoire and 84 Épatant and Joues Contraste in 68 Rose Écrin.
Illusion d’Ombre Long Wear Luminous Eyeshadow is a new range of cream-based eyeshadow from Chanel, and 83 Illusoire is one of the items used for Chanel’s ad visual for fall 2011 (above). It is a grayish aubergine with fine multi-hued sparkles. It works well as an intense shadowing shade and I particularly like it as an eyelining shade. It has a rich lustrous finish with shimmer, sparkles, and a metallic sheen.

84 Épatant is a medium moss green, which is lighter and looks even more light-reflective and shimmery than 83 Illusoire. Its shimmer is also multi-colored. It is a good medium shadowing shade which doesn’t look overly intense. It can be a relatively light eyelining shade as well.

Texture-wise, the product is between a fluffy mousse and a silky cream. It is relatively easy to apply, and it does allow sufficient time for blending. It layers very well, as it can easily go from sheer to intense. I do like the high-toned shimmery finish, which looks dimensional, not frosty or flat.
Even though it is not smudge-proof or waterproof, the general staying power is very good. On my eyes, both the color and the finish are able to stay fresh for up to 16 hours.
The product comes with a tapered angled brush. Even though, according to the application instructions, the brush can be used as an eyeshadow brush and an eyeliner brush, I find that the bristles are too tapered to spread or blend the eyeshadow evenly. It does work very well as an eyeliner brush, and I like how it easily creates a beautiful diamond-dust finish along the lash lines.
Overall, Illusion d’Ombre has the kind of luxuriously glimmering finish that is not usually found in Chanel’s powder-based eyeshadows. (It is also more shimmery than Chanel’s Ombre d’Eau.) If you are after both rich color and intense shimmer, then Illusion d’Ombre is certainly worth a look.
(Joues Contraste in 68 Rise Écrin)
In contrast to the intensity of the two items above, Joues Contraste Powder Blush in 68 Rose Écrin is a light muted warm rose with a soft glowy finish (that doesn’t look too iridescent or pearly). It goes on slightly warmer and darker on me, as it turns to a light-to-medium warm rose. The staying power is fairly decent.
I tend to go for blushers that are slightly more cool-toned than this for a fresher look, but it does suit my light-to-medium warm-toned complexion. It is a natural and elegant shade which should appeal to those who are looking for warm-toned blushers but want to avoid anything that looks peachy or coral.

I have No. 83 and I LOVE IT!
Hi Jamilla,
I am glad you like it!
Thank you for your comment again! :)
I wore the crystal white shade on my lids when I swam in the ocean in Maui this summer and it stayed on! I emerged from my swim and when I returned to my room, I saw that my lids were still sparkling and shimmery!
Hi Meredith,
Thank you for letting me know! When I put them on the back of my hand and run them under tap water (without rubbing them), the color indeed didn’t come off.
Some of the color can still be washed off with water and with a bit of rubbing, which is why I didn’t describe the product as waterproof. But it is certainly very long-wearing.
Thank you for posting your comment! :)
I love the eyeshadow!! I have the Epatant :D
Hi Abi,
Thank you very much for stopping by! :)
I love CHANEL Illusion d’Ombre eyeshadows!!!
They are amazing! Love their pigmentation and consistency!!!
I have Mirifique and it’s amazing but one of my next color will be Illusoire for sure cause it’s a beautiful shade too!! It’s a more wearable color for everyday use while Mirifique is for night out looks because it’s so dark!
I did a little review on it! Let me know what you think!
CHANEL Illusion d’Ombre MIRIFIQUE REVIEW + SWATCH
a kiss, Francesca
Hi Francesca,
Mirifique looks really nice. It is a very dramatic shade and I like how well the sparkly finish works with the intense color. I hope you will like Illusoire as well!
Thank you very much for stopping by! :)
