James Heeley is a British perfumer whose independent niche perfume line is based in Paris. Today I am featuring one of the line’s latest fragrances, Hippie Rose.

Top notes: bergamot, green moss
Middle notes: Bulgarian rose, patchouli
Base notes: Vetiver Haiti, incense, amber, musk

Overall, I would describe Hippie Rose as something between a floral oriental and an oriental. This is not a typical rose fragrance, as I feel that the rose note is far from pronounced in this composition.

Incense is the predominant character here, and this is obvious from the first moment of wear all the way to the drydown. (The bergamot in the top notes is taken over very quickly.) The smoky incense, paired with patchouli and musk, creates a great deal of depth and intensity. The heavy incense note reminds me of a temple, and the imagery of spiritualness that this scent evokes does go with the name of the scent.

Personally, I tend to prefer light and fresh fragrances to smoky and musky ones, and I feel that Hippie Rose is too heavy and incense-y for me. But I do think that this fragrance, which doesn’t remind me of any mass-market fragrance that I have come across,  is unique and fits the niche image of the brand.

If you are looking for a fresh and feminine rose-toned fragrance, then I don’t think Hippie Rose is for you. But if you are after the dense aroma of incense and musk, then Hippie Rose could be worth looking into.

James Heeley Hippie Rose is available in eau de parfum in 100ml. In the UK, James Heeley is available at James Heeley’s Online Boutique, Browns, and Les Senteurs.
