Most of my favorite beauty brands (especially when it comes to makeup) are designer brands. Beauty lines from Chanel, Dior, YSL, Anna Sui, Jill Stuart and Paul & Joe are beautiful extensions of their respective fashion brands as well as credible makeup/skincare lines in their own right.
On July 12th, Burberry Beauty was launched in the UK, and it is currently available exclusively in Harrods. Even though I am not a Burberry person, the look of the products did catch my attention. A fashion brand’s beauty line can help convey the image of the brand to a wider audience, through the colors and packaging (among other things), and, after seeing the products in person, I think Burberry has done well in both aspects.
The products are packaged in reflective dark steel-brown cases with the iconic Burberry check. The cases close magnetically so the sleek lines of the cases are not compromised. The lipsticks and the powder-based products (eyeshadows, foundations, blushers and bronzers) also have the Burberry check on the actual products. The overall look is sleek, chic and luxurious, and the cases feel substantial.
The makeup colors fit the classic Burberry palette. Christopher Bailey, Burberry’s chief creative director, describes the colors of Burberry Beauty, “The colors are taken from the signature Burberry color palette – natural, light, timeless and iconic. We have been inspired by our beautiful stormy, cloudy, misty, hazy skies followed by the gentle glow of the British sun.” The eyeshadows, currently featuring greys and skin-tonal neutrals, along with dusty pinks and mauves, are a good example of this color palette.
I tested some of the products at the counter last month, and the quality of the products is generally very good. The eyeshadows, blushers and bronzers are very smooth, silky and easy to blend. I like the fact that the blushers don’t have any shimmer, but it is a pity that I didn’t manage to find a shade that suited me. (They are mostly too dark, and the lightest shade is a little too pale.) The lipsticks are smooth, creamy, and pigmented. The one pictured at the top is Lip Cover in 20 Hibiscus, which is a deep berry-red. It is pigmented and without any shimmer.
The powder foundations and pressed powders are also very smooth and silky. I think, with their almost-creamy texture, they are likely to suit drier skin types better.
Price-wise, Burberry Beauty is towards the top-end of the department store brands. The lipsticks are priced at 22 GBP.
The current lineup of Burberry Beauty includes four categories: Burberry Skin (foundations), Burberry Glow (blushers and bronzers), Burberry Eyes and Burberry Lips.
Burberry Skin:
– Sheer Foundation (Luminous Fluid Foundation)
– Sheer Foundation (Luminous Compact Foundation)
– Sheer Powder (Luminous Pressed Powder)
Burberry Glow:
– Light Glow (Natural Blush)
– Warm Glow (Natural Bronzer)
– Beauty Brush (Face Brush)
Burberry Eyes:
– Sheer Eye Shadow (Eye Enhancer)
– Effortless Mascara (Volumising Lash Enhancer)
– Eye Definer (Eye Shaping Pencil)
Burberry Lips:
– Lip Cover (Soft Satin Lipstick)
– Lip Glow (Natural Lip Gloss)
– Lip Definer (Lip Shaping Pencil)
Overall this is an exciting launch of a beauty brand by a British fashion brand. But many of today’s consumers want to be constantly enticed, and a successful launch collection certainly does not guarantee longevity. Hopefully Burberry can keep its momentum with well-crafted seasonal collections, on-trend color additions and innovative product designs.
