Makeup Review: Revlon ColorStay Ultimate Lipcolor

in makeup, makeup - lip color

(from left to right:
060 Stellar Sunrise, 010 Premium Pink, 075 Number One Nude)

ColorStay Ultimate Lipcolor is one of Revlon’s recent major launches. The new liquid lipstick claims to be food-proof and lip-conditioning, and it promises to require no touch-up for up to 12 hours.

Ten shades are available in the UK at the moment. Pictured above, 060 Stellar Sunrise is a warm peachy coral, 010 Premium Pink is a rose-toned red, and 075 Number One Nude is a medium brown. All the three shades are well-pigmented and have a semi-matte finish.

The product has a liquidy cream texture and is applied with a wand. After a couple of minutes, the liquid dries up and becomes smudge-proof.

Practicality-wise, the product does deliver. It is water-proof, smudge-proof and, in almost all cases, food-proof, and the color is very long-lasting. There is virtually no need to touch up for the whole day. (For the product to be fully smudge-proof, it has to be worn on bare lips with no lip balm.)

However, it is not sufficiently moisturizing for the lips (especially for a product that has to be worn on bare lips.) The lips can feel tight and look dry after the liquid dries up. Also, the slightly frosty metallic sheen can make lip lines appear more obvious.

To help the lips appear more moisturized, I’d gently dab (not rub or massage) on some lip balm after the product dries up. In this case, the color is still relatively smudge-proof. However, it doesn’t really help the lips feel more soothed as the lip balm is not getting through the smudge-proof color layer.

Overall, the product does mostly what it promises, as it is a smudge-proof lipcolor that requires no touch-up. However, it is not the most comfortable lip product to wear and the finish is not ultra-flattering. I think I would rather have my lips look and feel moisturized and nourished, and I wouldn’t mind having to touch up.

Hi PJ

I completely agree with you; I would much rather reapply lipstick during the day and maintain moisture in my lips. I've never found a long-lasting lip product that didn't leave my lips looking like a shrivelled prune!

I have never been a huge "make-up wearer" and am currently trying to find some natural products that actually work and look great too. Any suggestions on this? My favorite skin care goodie that I just started using for my feet is the Topricin foot cream. I love it, it is serious pampering for tired feet like mine. Have you heard of this? Are there other skin creams for the face that you would recommend? Thanks, Caroline

Hi Shanghainese Dumpling,

You are very welcome. :)

My lips tend to be on the dry side so lip-color products do have to be quite moisturizing in order to work well for me. Unfortunately this product is not really able to keep my lips optimally moisturized.

Thank you for stopping by again! :)

Hi Lucie,

I am sorry that this product is not working well for you and that you are not able to get a refund. (In the UK, beauty products that are used can't be refunded either.)

Hi Grace,

I think that the ingredients (mainly emollients) that keep the lips conditioned and nourished are generally what keeps the color from being long-lasting. I also think the product formulation technology will have to improve in order to tackle this issue. Before that, we will just keep re-applying. :)

Thank you for your comment again! :)

Hi Caroline,

I think, for a natural look, tinted moisturizers might be worth considering. Laura Mercier does some nice ones that have been generally popular. As for skincare, I have not heard of Topricin before. Currently some of my skincare products are from Olay and Lancôme. I personally think many of Olay's moisturizers are quite well-formulated and are definitely worth looking into.

Hope it helps, and thank you very much for sharing your thoughts! :)

this reminds me of l'oreal's version circa 2001. they had a product with similar claims. i think it was sold in the uk only at the time. around the time the max factor lip gloss with budge proof top coat clear gloss was introduced.

i had a deep pink version of it. it worked like a stain, but more opaque and was also supposed to be moisturising. only for the first two minutes if anything. this one sounds just like it.

odd after so many years, they still cant get the formula right. fad maybe? maybe we don't really care how budge proof it gets?

Hiya,

I am in the US and a smoker. I have tried all of the earlier ''gens'' of Revlon Colorstay for lips and found them to be so very drying! I was about to purchase this new Ultimate until I happened by here at 2.30am. I really NEED to find something that will last.

Any suggestions on lipcolor that will last but isn't in this lip stain category? Let's hear from folks what is the best wearing regular lipstick that you like?!

Thanks!

Elizabeth

Hi Kathia,

I think the Max Factor version is supposed to be quite good. (I have not tried it.) Perhaps the two-coat version is still generally better…

My impression is that many smudge-proof lip color items don't really offer many other benefits (such as conditioning the lips and an ultra-flattering finish). Maybe when the technology improves, we will see a new generation of products.

Thank you very much for your comment again! :)

Hi Elizabeth,

I wouldn't describe Revlon ColorStay Ultimate as a lip stain. It coats the lips with color like an usual lipstick and it doesn't stain the lips. (It is just that it dries up to a smudge-proof finish.) However, it is quite drying, presumably like the earlier generations.

Some of the MAC lipsticks that I have tried are relatively long-lasting, but I am not sure if they meet your requirements. Hopefully other readers might want to share their experiences.

Thank you for posting your comment! :)
