Sofina‘s Aube Couture will release its spring 2010 collection in Japan on December 5th. The collection includes:

– Designing Premium Rouge (16 shades)
– Designing Highlight (1 shade, used for the under-eye area)

The shapes of the powder in Aube Couture’s compacts usually indicate where the powder is used. (See my post “
User-Friendly Makeup: Aube Couture” for an example.) In the case of Designing Highlight, the half-moon areas (as in the shape of the powder in the compact) under the eyes are where the powder is supposed to be used.

After I posted about Sofina’s Beauté skincare line, one of my readers, Ming, requested that I write about Hada.ka, one of Sofina’s other skincare lines. Here is a brief overview of the line.

Hada.ka was launched a few years ago and is available at Sofina counters in Japan and Hong Kong. The line is targeted at consumers in their twenties with unstable skin conditions due to various factors such as lack of sleep and stress. The key product of the line is Deep Boost, which is used after the cleanser and before the toner. It is supposed to facilitate the absorption of the toner and whichever is applied afterwards and to help the skin stay optionally hydrated.

(Some other Japanese skincare brands/lines also feature products that are used before a toner. (I call them pre-toners.) Most are for deep hydration and some (infused with ingredients such as AHA or BHA and used with cotton pads) are wipe-off exfoliators.)

Here is the current lineup of Hada.ka (with notes on whether a product is for morning/night/both):

– Makeup remover:
Skin Reset Oil Cleansing (night)

– Face wash
Skin Reset Washing Foam (morning/night)

– Massage serum
Refining Massage (night)

– Skin softener/texturizer (used before toner)
Deep Boost (morning/night)

– Toner
Aqua Charge Lotion (morning/night)

– Moisture serum
Night Moist Solution (night)

– Emulsion
Deep Moisturizer (night)

– Emulsion/sunscreen
UV Protect Moisturizer (morning)

(Aqua Charge Lotion and Deep Moisturizer are available in two versions for different skin types. Also, UV Protect Moisturizer is available in two versions, one with SPF 24 PA+++ and one with SPF 50 PA+++.)

Prices of Hada.ka’s items are similar to those of Sofina’s other skincare lines. For instance, Deep Boost (180ml) retails for 2835 JPY (about 30 USD).

I have not tried items from Hada.ka yet. If you have, do please let me know your thoughts on them. Thank you very much!

In fall 2009, Est will add Cream Make Up Active Aura Moist (SPF 23, PA++) to the brand’s base makeup lineup. The product features “skin-synchro film”, which helps provide a natural skin-like finish, and “water-reflect powder”, which creates a dewy glow for the complexion.

It will be available in Japan from August 29th.

Est will release its fall 2009 collection in Japan on July 25th. The new items include:

– Emotional Multiple Eyes (4 new variations)

– Eyelash Shade (cream eyeliner, 4 shades, including 2 limited editions)

– Advanced Lips (4 new shades)

Update on June 23rd 2009:

Here is a quick look at all the items in the collection. I would love to see more images of the purple palette soon…

Est’s overarching makeup concept is Emotional Beauty, and many of Est’s seasonal makeup ad campaigns are based on one particular emotion. What is very unique (and quite refreshing) is the brand’s exploration of negative emotions. After sorrow and depair, Est is tackling anger in fall 2009. Concept-wise, this is going to be a memorable collection.

A few readers have requested that I highlight one of Sofina’s latest skincare ranges, Sofina Beauté. Here is a brief profile of the line, which I hope would be helpful for you.

Sofina Beauté was launch in January 2008. It is positioned as Sofina’s anti-aging skincare range for those in their 30s and 40s. (Meanwhile, Vital Rich is targeted at those in their 40s, and Grace Sofina is marketed towards those in their 50s and beyond.)

The main claim of the line is that the products are formulated to improve the penetration of the ingredients and to be able to reach the “core” of the skin. According the press release from Kao, some of the ingredients in the products are ginger extract, citron extract, and eucalyptus extract.

The range features a full lineup of basic skincare products, which include:

– four makeup removers (oil, cream, gel, and foam)
– two face washes (foaming and non-foaming)
– four toners (I being the least emollient and IV being the most emollient)
– one skin-firming serum
– four night-time moisturizers (three emulsions and one cream)
– four daytime moisturizers (two with SPF 24, PA+++ and two with SPF 50, PA+++)
– eye mask sheets

The prices of the products are similar to those of the existing Sofina skincare products. (The night-time emulsion is 3675 JPY (about 37 USD).)

I haven’t tried products from this range so I don’t really have any first-hand experience. One reason is the alcohol, which is a recurring issue with many Japanese skincare products. (You can see the ingredient lists of the night-time emulsion (II) and the makeup removal cream here and here. The emulsion has too much alcohol and my skin will certainly not be able to tolerate the product.) I have not had a chance to see all the ingredient lists so I don’t know precisely which other products also contain alcohol.

If you have had a chance to try products from Sofina Beauté, do please leave your comment and let us know what you think of them. Thank you very much!

6. Max Factor

(image from www.maxfactor.jp)

Many of the Max Factor releases in Asia are very different from those in the west. In the case of the spring 2009 collection, these colorful palettes have a particularly Japanese feel and look very much like the tone-on-tone palettes that have constantly been brought out by Japanese brands. (The purple-toned palette reminds me of my Lunasol Lavender Coral.)

Do check this post for a great review of the green-toned palette (with swatches of all the palettes). The writer pointed out the improvement in the powder’s pigmentation level and lasting power. (The low pigmentation level from previous releases was mentioned by one reader under my initial post on this collection.)

5. Lavshuca

(image from www.kanebo-cosmetics.jp/lavshuca)

“Cute” is still the best word to describe Lavshuca‘s makeup, but I do like the fact that the brand doesn’t try to be overly girlie. (The plum cases look quite elegant.) The spring 2009 collection includes a new range of lipsticks and eye palettes. I nearly decided to get Grade Color Eyes in PU-1 (top right in the photo above), but the colors are a little too pale and don’t seem warm enough for me. On the other hand, I am still interested in trying the new Finish Powder.

4. Aube Couture

(Aube Couture Designing Eyes)
(image from www.sofina.co.jp/aube)

I wasn’t really a big fan of Aube’s last few collections, but the new Aube Couture‘s debut collection got my attention. A lot of design went into some of the items to make them as user-friendly as possible. (Please see this post for examples and more discussion.) I’d think that the packaging was still kept very simple so that it wouldn’t overtake the actual design features, and Aube Couture certainly gets extra points from making makeup application a little bit easier for us.

The countdown continues in Part 3.
