(My Boots Advantage Card…and what it got me.)

When it comes to shopping for cosmetics, living in the UK has crucial disadvantages. Things are more (or much more) expensive, and, once opened, they can’t usually be returned and refunded.

But there are a few positive things. One of them involves one of my favorite drugstores (which we call chemists in the UK), Boots.

Boots runs a loyalty card called Boots Advantage Card in the UK and some other countries. The customer reward system has often been accurately described as “generous” by the UK press.

Anyone can apply for the card for free. For every pound spent on anything in store, 4 points is earned on the card. Each point is worth 0.01 pound, so every 100 points is worth 1 pound (about 2 USD).

Customers can use their points to get anything sold in any Boots store for free (but not on Boots.com) and the points never expire. For example, 500 points are worth any 5-pound product in a Boots store.

I know this doesn’t sound very exciting. But it is all the extras that make the system more than generous:

1. There are usually 200 extra points for a transaction over 25 pounds, as long as I remember to print out the voucher at a kiosk in the store before paying for the items.

(or in this case…300 points)

I always try to do my Boots shopping either once or twice a month (instead of many small purchases). I make sure I go into the store knowing the amount I will be spending. If I plan to spend more than 50 pounds, I print out two vouchers and pay for them in two lots. (A calculator is always handy for a Boots visit.)

Extra points earned this way during a year: 3000

2. Both drugstore and premium brands sold in Boots stores do point giveaways. Each brand runs the giveaway several times a year. For example, Lancôme gives 1000 points for 2 skincare purchases, Clinique gives 1200 points for 3 skincare products, and Estee Lauder gives 750 points for 2 makeup products. (Dior, YSL, Clarins also run similar promotions.) Also, different promotions are run in store and on-line.

(a typical Boots promotion on premium brands)
(image from www.boots.com)

I have noticed that each promotion is run at about the same time during the year, so I plan my purchases accordingly to get the maximal points. (Shopping for me is a highly-organized activity. I am like Monica in Friends. The more organized, the more fun…)

Extra points earned this way during a year: 2000

3. Several times a year, there are triple-point weekends. 12 points are given for each pound spent instead of the usual 4.

Extra points earned this way during a year: 250

4. There are Boots magazines in store and occasional mailed newsletters with extra-point vouchers.

(a Boots extra-point voucher,
from Boots Health & Beauty Magazine Nov/Dec 2007)

Extra points earned this way during a year: 250

5. My favorite is Boots Christmas Shopping Evening. They are run two to three times before Christmas. Each Boots store advertises its own dates, which are well advertised in advance. In these events, 1000 points are given for each transaction over 50 pounds. This is usually on top of all the other extra-point offers mentioned above.

Extra points earned this way during a year: 2000

Total extra points during a year: 7500
This plus 4 points for every pound spent: about 10000
Cash equivalent: 100 pounds (200 USD)

These points are usually more than enough for me to use on what I want to have from Dior during a year. What is left would just keep accumulating and would not expire.

I have always been an extremely loyal Boots customer. (Apart from the point scheme, they have great customer services.) Whatever I want (general toiletries, premium cosmetics, electronics, exercise equipments, cell phone credits, light snacks), if it is available in Boots, I won’t buy it anywhere else.

But one strict rule that I do have for myself is never to buy anything just for extra points. Otherwise it would just be a waste of money.

One negative point I have come across about the Boots Advantage Card system is that it is a way for Boots to analyze a customer’s purchasing habits. The system helps Boots come up with new products as well as take on or stop stocking a certain brand of products. Some people don’t like their shopping habits to be monitored, and I perfectly understand that. But their system is essentially like any other loyalty card system in any other store. (London’s high-end department store Harrods started a similar but much less generous one earlier this year.) Overall, systems like this work for or against customers, and it all depends on one’s point of view.

I do enjoy getting and using my points and the reward system is more generous than those of any other drugstore, supermarket and department store I know in the UK. I think this is why a Boots card is quite an usual thing to have for people living in the UK. As long as customers (like me) enjoy planning purchases ahead of time, points can roll in quite quickly and we can use them on virtually anything sold in store. I am sure there are many people who save up their points to get more pricey items like digital cameras or MP3 players.

I could be wrong, but, in the US, Boots’ own brand products are sold in stores like Target and Boots doesn’t have its own free-standing stores carrying other drugstore or premium cosmetics brands. So maybe this is why Boots is not running the same system in the US. But things might change. We’ll see!

(The answer is behind the question mark.)

I have been enjoying collecting Dior’s seasonal limited-edition items in the past few years. But most of the time, I don’t have to pay for them.

It is not a secret of any sort. I am sure some people are doing exactly what I do.

All, in an extended report, will be revealed on Thursday.

Do come back tomorrow!

Dior Spring 2008 Makeup Collection

(Dior spring 2008 makeup collection)
(images from www.cosme.net)

Among western cosmetics brands, Dior‘s seasonal collection has been among those I look forward to the most, especially the limited-edition item.

The Dior spring 2008 makeup collection (launched in Japan on January 11, 2008) will include, among others, eyeshadows, lip glosses, and nail colors*. The base makeup additions will feature pressed powders (pictured bottom left) as well as Capture Totale Serum Foundation (bottom right), which will be a top-end foundation item for Dior.

Also part of the new base makeup lineup is DiorSkin Shimmer Powder (top middle), with gradations of shades. These have really caught my attention.

Dior’s limited-edition item for spring 2008 is named Dior Flower Blossom (not to be confused with the 5-color eyeshadow palette in #690 Flower Blosom). It will include 5 eyeshadows in pastel shades and a pressed face powder.

I have not come across a photo yet, and I will be updating this post when there is more information.

(*Dior’s cosmetics releases can vary substantially from country to country, especially the shades of eyeshadows and lipsticks.)

It does look beautiful, but I am trying to decide whether I actually want to get this or not. What do you think?

Exciting spring 2008 makeup preview!
(image from i-voce.boxerblog.com/contents/index.html)

The Voce website has a page from the January 2008 issue, featuring a preview of some spring 2008 makeup collections.

I see Dior, Chanel, Jill Stuart, Lunasol, Anna Sui, Givenchy, Guerlain, Coffret D’Or, Beauté de Kosé, and perhaps Helena Rubinstein, Sofina Est and Shu Uemura…just to name a few.

I think I have already seen some items I want…and it is still November!

I am loving the look of the Chanel and Lunasol lilac eyeshadow palettes (as if I didn’t have enough lilac palettes…with my T’Estimo, Jill Stuart, and Lavshuca lilac bonanza).

What has grabbed your attention?

Updated on Friday, November 23, 2007:

Bjooti has kindly confirmed that the zebra-printed one towards the top left is indeed from the Helena Rubinstein spring 2008 collection. Take a look at the full collection on her blog!

(Dior DiorLight Jewelled Makeup Necklace for the Lips)

Priced at 54 pounds in the UK (about 112 USD), it is not cheap. But since I had enough Boots advantage points and I really liked the look of this necklace, I decided to use my points on this after it was launched in Boots on November 6th. (It was launched in some department stores earlier.) So I didn’t spend any money on this.

(I will write another post later on to explain to my readers outside the UK how the popular and uniquely generous Boots Advantage Point system works.)

Here, Dior’s seasonal limited-edition items are usually priced at 35 pounds (about 73 USD). I suppose this one is pricier because of the Swarovski crystals used on the pendant (not on the “Dior” logo though).

The gloss comes in two choices, pink and beige. (Only the beige is available in the US.) I picked the prettier pink one.

(the “default” pink)

As I mentioned in my initial report on the various Christmas 2007 collections, this pendant is larger than what I expected. The total length of the necklace is about 82 cm. It comes with a black draw-string pouch for storage and protection.

The lip gloss is what I call a “default” pink, a universally wearable pink with some shimmer that should suit most people.

Having said that, I will probably not use it, as it joins my permanent Dior collection…

(Dior’s DiorLight…
safely made it to my shopping list)
(image from www.cosme.net)

Three upscale department stores in London, Selfridges, Harvey Nichols, and Harrods, have launched several holiday 2007 makeup collections. It’s getting earlier and earlier each year. I think it is rather ridiculous for shops to display Christmas gift sets in the beginning of October, but at least I have enough time to look through the items without making any impulsive purchase.

As promised, here are my initial thoughts after I saw the actual items. (Please follow the links to see all the photos.)

Dior:

First I saw the Trotter Romantique palettes in Harvey Nichols. The larger one (with the mascara and the lip gloss) looks decent with wearable colors. It is smaller than the similar ones I saw. (The sales assistant seemed defensive when I compared it with the pink purse palette that I saw in Heathrow Airport, but I did mean it as a compliment. I would love to see more airport-exclusive Dior items sold in department stores.)

The two smaller square palettes are disappointing. There is no problem with the shades. It is the flimsy packaging. Very un-Dior-like. The lids are a bit wobbly and the shiny black PVC edge trimmings look brassy. The quality of the packaging is simply not as good as that of the Detective Chic or the Diorissime palette.

Then I saw the DiorLight pendant in Selfridges. The surprise is that it is bigger than what I imagined. I thought it would be slightly bigger than the size of a cherry, but it is only slightly smaller than a ping-pong ball. Quite a huge pendant. But it also highlights the fact that it is very light…almost too light, even though it sports many Swarovski crystals. (The Holiday 2006 Dior Pretty Charms is pleasantly weighty.) The two shades are the usual warm pink and light beige.

The sales assistant seemed bemused at the fact that I was carefully checking out the details of the “crystal ball”. Well, it costs 54 pounds (108 USD), and obviously it is the packaging that we are paying for, not the gloss.

I do like it and I will consider getting it, but I will think really hard about whether to spend that amount of money on a gloss pendant.

YSL:

I saw all the holiday 2007 items in Harvey Nichols. The heart-shape pendant, unlike DiorLight, has a good chunky feel. But I still think that, while the design idea is good, the actual finished product is not. I personally think that It needs more fluidity in the whole design.

As for the silver palette, I like the cute color of the blusher. There is actually a heart-shape spongy pad placed on top of the blusher pan. Cute, but not very useful. (But maybe it is precisely for printing a heart-shape blush on your face or body.) The other shades are very nondescript. After seeing in person the first silver holiday palette for YSL in years, I still prefer the gold packaging, like I said before.

Guerlain: (images from Makeup Bag)

The main buzz surrounds the Forever Gold Sublime Radiant Powder, which, along with the rest of the Guerlain Holiday 2007 collection, was launched in Selfridges. I spayed it on the back of my hand and saw a veil of delicate but very sparkly shimmer revealed itself. I was impressed with the gentle and even finish, and it should be great to add a touch of shimmer to the face and the body. The idea of the product works in theory and in reality, and I am sure this unique item will sell very well.

Givenchy: (image from Bjooti.Net, another image here)

The star item is Prisme Solitaire, which I saw in Harrods. Compared with Guerlain’s Forever Gold, this one gives a more intense and concentrated shimmer. (Guerlain’s Forever Gold is soft and airy, but still very sparkly.) It really is like diamond dust. Depending on how you use it, it can be an all-over shimmer or it can inject a dose of beaming sparkles to your eyes. Packaging-wise, I like the case very much, which looks like a real diamond ring case.

I personally don’t like too much shimmer, so Guerlain’s Forever Gold and Givenchy’s Prisme Solitaire will not make any appearance on my shopping list. But, if you like sparkles and shimmer, I highly recommend that you check out these two.

So far, the items on my holiday shopping list are Dior’s DiorLight and palettes from MAC’s Antiquitease. I can’t wait to see Antiquitease in person…

More on Dior Holiday 2007: TOTALLY DIOR Cannage

by PJ on Sunday, September 30, 2007

in -Dior, 2007 Holiday

(TOTALLY DIOR Cannage)
(from www.cosme.net)

I have to admit it…this is the sort of thing that might tempt me to book a flight to Japan.

Dior comes up with a special customized luxury set like this in every holiday season in Japan. Usually, a set comes with a Dior bag (not the kind of very basic toiletry bag from gifts with purchases) and a selection of beauty products.

What is also special about the set is that there is customized flexibility. In this year’s case, customers can choose any lip product (lipstick or lip gloss) and any shade they want. They can also choose any nail color they want.

The TOTALLY DIOR Cannage includes:
–any lip color product

–any nail color product

–Skin Shimmering Loose Powder

–Original Face Brush

–Dior Cannage bag

The price of the set ranges from 34,650 to 35,490 yen (from 300 USD to 308 USD), depending on exactly which lip and nail products are chosen by a customer.

Judging by the price, the bag might not be the kind of Dior bags purchased in Dior boutiques, but it should certainly not be shabby, to say the least.

It is very unlikely that this will be available outside Japan. (But if it is actually sold in any other country, I would be thrilled to be corrected.) In the meantime, we can always dream, and things can change (while we are saving up)!

Dior Holiday 2007 Collection: First Look

by PJ on Thursday, September 27, 2007

in -Dior, 2007 Holiday, makeup

(from www.cosme.net)

Dior Light, a lip-gloss enclosed pendant, is part of the Dior Holiday 2007 Collection line-up. I have to say I am loving the look of this and will definitely consider getting it.

Some other Dior Holiday 2007 Collection items to get you excited:

Eye palette (two versions):

(from www.cosme.net)

Lip Palette (two versions):

(from www.cosme.net)

You probably have seen Dior palettes like this below in airport duty-free shops. I have seen one in pink and it looked really lovely. Now we don’t need to be going somewhere to get this…

(from www.cosme.net)

This looks like a very exciting collection, with glamorous packaging as usual. I thought it was about time that they brought out a pendant, after they did bracelets, rings, ID plates, charms, and clutch palettes.

The shades look wearable. It is not surprising since of course many people will be buying these items as gifts. But the shades are on trend as well (I am seeing some grey eyeshadows.)

Again, the packaging of the palettes is inspired by their fashion accessory lines. This time, it is from one of my favorite Dior accessory collections, Trotter Romantique:

#3: Jill Stuart

(from www.jillstuart-beauty.com)

(from Biteki September 2007)

When I knew there was going to be a new pressed powder blusher for Jill Stuart, I was trying to imagine what it would look like. I have to say the actual packaging doesn’t disappoint me, to say the least. Very ornate and princessy. (I will review this later on.)

The limited-edition Point Crystal II loose eyeshadow (pictured mid-right) rides on the success of the previous Point Crystal from last fall. This time, the shades are slightly more intense. Overall this is such a pretty collection.

#2: Dior

(from www.dior.com)
(from Biteki September 2007)

The 5-color eyeshadow palette in 060 Silver Goddess (the right one of the two palettes) is so fall 2007, with great shades of grey and silvery copper. If you have tested the blue shade in this palette, you know that it has vivid pink shimmer. So very pretty. The two eyeshadow palettes also complement the two Diorissime palettes (far right).

Currently only two Dior Blush shades are sold in Japan, while a larger selection is available in the US and the UK. There is actually a shade called A Touch of Blush. Well, not exactly the name of my blog, but close enough. (And it is a great natural shade!)

The Diorissime palettes finish off the collection beautifully. I have 002 Seduction Drama (the one available in the US) and I love it.

#1: Lunasol

(from www.kanebo-cosmetics.jp/lunasol)
(from Biteki September 2007)

This is the best collection for fall 2007 in my opinion. It is also one of the most stunning collections from Lunasol.

All the items for eyes, lips, and nails coordinate with one another and come in five mini collections. Each features a 5-color eyeshadow palette, an eyeliner, a lipstick, a lip gloss, and a nail color. Among the eyeshadow palettes, the one in blue (04 Saphire) and pink (05 Ruby) are very popular in Asia right now, and they certainly tickle my fancy!
