(Coffret D’Or Trance Deep Eyes in Grey Variation)

Two weeks ago, I talked about Rose Variation from Coffret D’Or‘s Trance Deep Eyes series for fall 2008. Today I am reviewing Grey Variation.

Grey Variation features a cool lilac as the shadowing shade along with a medium grey for lining the eyes. The four colors are (clock-wise from top-left):

A off-white (sheer, mildly shimmery)
B cool medium lilac (moderately pigmented, shimmery)
C medium-to-dark grey (well pigmented, luminous matte under the sparse shimmer)
D off-white silver (moderately pigmented, very sparkly)

(As with Rose Variation, all shades have fine multi-colored shimmer and a good staying power.)

Compared with Rose Variation, Grey Variation is my preferred one since the cool medium lilac brings out the dimension of the eyes a lot more. This dimension-enhancement is twofold:

– The lilac is darker than the warm dusty pink (the shadowing shade) in Rose Variation. The dusty pink can be a little too subtle, particularly for the evening.

– The lilac’s tone changes when looked at from different angles (while the depth of the color remains the same). When seen straight-on (as seen in the photo), the lilac has a cool tone. However, when seen from the side (when the palette is held almost horizontally in front of my eye-line), the shade takes on a slightly warmer tone (particularly under sunlight). But I didn’t manage to really capture the difference on camera. (There is also such a tone variation with the dusty pink in Rose Variation, but it is extremely minimal.)

What is great is that this tone variation also shows up when worn and it gives a good eye-sculpting effect (even when the color is worn lightly). (But please note that this variation is different from (and much subtler than) the iridescence that we see in, for example, Lancôme’s L.U.C.I. collection in spring 2008.)

It is also worth mentioning that this palette does appear similar to Maquillage Clean Contrast Eyes 2 in SV844. However, the lilac in the Maquillage palette is quite pale and is a lightening color, whereas the lilac here is darker and performs as a shadowing shade.

As I mentioned, at the moment I prefer Grey Variation to Rose. But, compared with Purple Variation from the 3D Lighting Eyes series, I think I still like Purple better and I’d say I like Grey as much as I like Gold.

Overall I am quite happy with the two I have from the Trance Deep Eyes series. In an earlier post, I mentioned that I was also considering Beige Variation. It is still on my shopping list, but not anywhere towards the top. There is no limited edition in either of the two palette series, so for now I’ll look forward to spring 2009.

Shiseido Maquillage has updated its website to include information on the fall 2008 collection.

The collection is titled Mode Mix, and the website has launched Mode Mix TV, which features a dynamic presentation of the fall collection. Check out the backstage footages of the TV commercial shoot, profiles on Christopher Kane (who collaborated with Shiseido on the collection) and Agyness Deyn, and key makeup looks modelled by all five brand ambassadors.

Here is a quick preview of Beauté de Kosé‘s fall 2008 collection. The lineup will include two new eye palettes (limited editions) as well as new shades of Eye Fantasist (in grey and light beige), Rouge Fantasist, and Nail Dramatist.

Kosé Cosmenience Elsia Fall 2008 Foundation Collection

Elsia is a Kosé Cosmenience line that is mainly a base and point makeup line. (Kosé Cosmenience is the name of the group of Kosé‘s drugstore lines such as Fasio, Whitist, Junkisei Prime, and Happy Bath Day.) On August 21st, Elsia will release six brand new foundation products in Japan. They include (anti-clock-wise on photo above):

Powder-type:
– Moist Foundation (SPF 22, PA++)
– Lift Foundation (SPF 22, PA++)
– White Foundation (SPF 26, PA++)

Liquid/cream-type:
– Moist Cream Foundation N (SPF 25, PA++)
– White Liquid Foundation (SPF 26, PA++)
– White Liquid Foundation Quick Finish (SPF 26, PA++)

(All items are available in 4 shades.)

Among them, the White Liquid Foundation Quick Finish seems particularly interesting since Kosé claims that it is able to create an ideal finish without help from a primer or a setting powder (hence the “quick finish” in the name).

Kosé also mentions the items’ amount of coverage and the finish as relative to one another within the power and liquid/cream types:

Powder-type:

Coverage: Lift > Moist > White
From matte to glowy: White – Most – Lift

Liquid/cream-type:

Coverage:
Moist Cream > Quick Finish > White Liquid

From matte to glowy:
White Liquid – Quick Finish – Moist Cream

Apart from the six new foundation products, Elsia will also release Cheek Color N (4 shades), Quick Dry Nail Color (20 shades), and Cleansing Milk.

Jill Stuart has updated the official website to include information and images of its fall 2008 makeup collection. The collection includes:

– Illuminance Eyes palettes (5 variations, #05 limited-edition)
– Mix Blush Compact Illuminance (2 variations, both limited editions)
– Lip Luster (3 new shades)
– Nail Color N (5 new shades)

Jill Stuart obviously knows what works and has released new editions of eye palettes and blushers. Both are among the brand’s best-selling items. The packaging varies minimally, with slightly different case designs and an added charm for the blusher brush.

However, just like the packaging, I am not seeing anything substantially different from past collections. I feel that I have seen almost all these palettes before, and it seems almost as if the gold prints are added to existing shades of the blusher. (By the way, the information sent to Jill Stuart Club members in Taiwan very clearly (and commendably frankly) states that the gold prints will gradually wear off.)

There is no doubt that this is an extremely beautiful and dreamy collection and that these items will sell well. But I suspect some Jill Stuart fans might be slightly disappointed with the fact that the brand hasn’t been trying hard to come up with new and slightly more creative product designs. In a way, the brand has been so successful that there is probably no need to, at least for the moment.

Hopefully there will be nice surprises for the holiday and (especially) the spring 2009 collection. As a fan, I will remain positive.

ck Calvin Klein Fall 2008 Makeup Collection

Here is a first look at the ck Calvin Klein Beauty‘s fall 2008 collection.

The collection will include the line’s first four-color eyeshadow palette and nail colors, along with new additions to the lipstick and lip gloss ranges.

The brown/plum color scheme is very consistent throughout the new collection and creates a lasting visual impact. Plum can be a very flattering shade for many, but it is a little bit on the warm side for me. (I prefer violets and lilacs.) But overall I am very glad to see the line’s first seasonal collection since it was launched in the US and the UK earlier this year. Hope there are many more to come!

Sonia Rykiel will release its fall 2008 makeup collection in Japan on August 22nd. The collection includes:

– Quatre Eyeshadow Collection (seen above, 5 variations)

– Eyelash Mascara (5 shades)

– Nail Color (3 new shades)

The eye palette above looks very pretty and almost reminds me of Lunasol’s Lavender Coral (even though the Sonia Rykiel palette only has one lilac shade). I don’t own a Sonia Rykiel eye palette and this might be a good one to start my collection with…

Shiseido Maquillage will release its fall 2008 base makeup collection in Japan on August 21st. The collection includes:

– Climax Moisture Liquid (8 shades, SPF 12 PA+)
– Perfect Remake Compact (3 shades, SPF 15 PA+, case and puff sold separately)
– Moisture Retouch Gel (moisturizing primer)

The collection will also feature a foundation case designed by British fashion designer Christopher Kane, who collaborated with Shiseido for Maquillage’s fall 2008 makeup collection. (The case takes rectangular refills from the existing Maquillage powder foundations, not those from the new Perfect Remake Compact.)

Kosé Esprique Precious Fall 2008 Collection – First Look

Kosé’s Esprique Precious will release its fall 2008 collection in Japan on August 21st.

Detailed information of the new items is not yet available on Nikkei Net, but it is known that the collection will include seven new products, including the new eye palette range, lipstick range, and the powder foundation seen above.

Also, as we can see, the line will have its first major image overhaul after it was launched in 2006. The new look features clean off-white cases with decorative details. I think it has a grown-up look but it seems to lack style and character. I would still love to see close-ups of some of the items on the official website and in Japanese beauty magazines later on.
